It’s kind of interesting how my relationship with various Kanji has evolved as I progress, and also am doing other things to study. I look at some “old friends” with “new eyes”… Sometimes I’m more confused a later time! But that is usually because now I know a new thing that is similar, of which I was previously unaware!

Here’s a cat I took a picture of when I lived in Oonojo, Fukuoka.
…yeah just hitting level 5 (again :P) yesterday, and yeah… absolutely no regrets. Fine tuning this kanji machine. Going for that elusive Pera Peraness.
I didn’t read any previous comments and I don’t use any scripts so I can’t help with any Wanikani or other features, but what I do when I start getting those damn leeches in my reviews and bombing them (as I always do) is if something comes up, and I can’t immediately recall it, I write the kanji down and what I do know about it.
Sometimes I’ll know the meaning, sometimes I will know the reading, sometimes I won’t remember anything at all. I still write it down. Then I take my best guess. If it is wrong, I check the meaning/reading and write it next to the kanji I already wrote down.
When it comes up again, and I still struggle to catch it, I run through my written kanji leeches list (which it eventually becomes) and if it is there, highlight it, because I still didn’t remember it. Eventually, you will figure out what you struggle with the most, but I find that writing them down really helps me.
It sounds like you may have been doing some kind of writing before, but I hope this helps. Good luck with your leeches and as long as you keep your apprentice items down it doesn’t get so bad. <3
Yeah I didn’t almost the exact same thing going through Wanikani last time around.
Being I reset and I’m now 5 1/2 again… I’m beating the hell out of it.
But I’m very interested in utilizing the new extra study add-on… I think it came out right once I hit level 60, I was using it while trying to get through my growing lessons.
However, having reset and going through it again, I have found that I’m learning more about these basic kanjis now having so much reference on them being I went through the program already.
If things get brutal again in the future I will no doubt use the extra study and the writing again.
