Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: お探し物は図書室まで

Haha sorry I didn’t see the @'s till now. Yeah, romance isn’t a focus at all and nothing even remotely explicit happens if anyone was worried about that. Honestly the anime played it up way more to the point I was kinda suprised; the books are much more focused on the details of the overarching story.

@riccyjay oho I haven’t read that work of his yet! I could always use a good laugh and will pick it up when I can  thanks for mentioning it!

And no worries, I agree. Paprika as a film is a visual and auditory joy ride with a different feel from the book! One of the those cases where if I had to choose I’d rather watch

I’m down with that.

It looks like「わすがに」is part of the first clause modifying 「土」, so I would go with “slightly damp.”

“The slightly damp soil had an odor,” I think.

Looks like I can’t follow along for this one, but I’ll try for the second one

You can’t? How come?

I’m really poor in the grammar department and many have already started, so I’d be lagging behind a lot haha. The price of a real book is a bit much, and I can’t really order the ebooks because I don’t know how to make an account on the cheaper sites. :frowning: stupid amazon being so expensive…

We haven’t started yet – some people have gone ahead, but they really shouldn’t. We’re waiting (or at least I hope we’re waiting) for the people who have books on the way! Don’t worry about that. I do think it’ll be difficult to find a lower price than Amazon’s $3 ebook price, though.

I think even if you understand only 10% of what you’re reading, that’s enough to grasp the story. However bad you may be at Japanese, I think you’ll learn a lot trying to read through an entire book – quantity over quality, right?

Hold out 'til next time if you want – just know that there are plenty of others in the same boat.

I don’t know where you’re seeing 3$ D: I can’t even find a japanese ebook on amazon and I don’t think my knowledge is good enough to figure out ordering on amazon jp ;-;

This is what the 文庫本 looks like to me on Amazon JP:

The Kindle version is ¥302 for me, and you can read it without a Kindle too as far as I know. The Amazon UK physical 文庫本 is £5, too, which admittedly is a bit more expensive but not too bad (especially if you have Prime).

And I’m sure you could figure out ordering! 自信を持って!

okay, I’ve made my account and all that, now:

It’s not available in the UK?!?!

WAIT!!! I have TOR BROWSER!!!

(Do make sure to check out the Amazon UK link, though. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t be able to order that one.)

I’m going to eat my own slippers. It won’t LET me purchase the ebook through TOR?!?! HOW.

Also, on the amazon uk page, there’s no kindle option for me either??? I’m so confused. xD

Ah, no, there’s no ebook version on the Amazon UK page. You’d have to get the physical version there. Since you have Prime, though, no shipping cost~

If you want the ebook version, though, you can check out sirvorn’s wonderful guide on buying ebooks from Amazon JP. It’s fairly detailed, so you should be able to get through it.

Successfully created a Japanese address with Tenso, and paid through a non-Japanese credit card. Brought through Kindle / Amazon JP. I followed Sirvorn’s guide.

@Aemaeth I in addition to everyone else has been saying, I also had to use a VPN to get the ebook. I got into quite a bit of trouble with actually haha, so be careful with it. First my bank closed my card because to them it looked like I withdrew money in Pa, then 12 hours later I was in Japan buying books. Then my college saw the VPN as malicious hardware, and blocked me of their wifi. I had wipe my computer to get back on. I don’t think it’s dangerous, just be mindful where you use I suppose.

And we are waiting for everyone to get their books to declare the due date, but I don’t see anything wrong with reading ahead if you have it.

I actually have no idea…but judging from how long 6 pages have taken me…my grammar ability is pretty poor. I half-know most of the grammar so far, enough to kinda get it, but still at the point that if I want to understand everything, that means constantly looking up and properly learning/reviewing grammar points.
