Intermediate Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: お探し物は図書室まで

Same here  I had bought it during my most recent trip to Paris, and all of a sudden it’s nominated in this thread - blew my mind somewhat

Very difficult choice. After going through the list of nominations, I had ten books that I would like to read.

I had around 7 or so that seemed interesting to me. Had to reduce it down to 5 as well.

I keep being surprised by how different the results are each time :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

For example, last time 人質の朗読会 almost won, and 掏摸 was towards the bottom of the list. Now their positions are reversed, and 掏摸 even has more votes than 人質の朗読会 had, and as many as last time’s winner, even though the voters are fewer so far. So strange

It might be interesting to do some popularity change charts, I wonder what’s affecting these fluctuations.

Wow, the top three are all ones I voted for  But then the other two I voted for are likely going to be removed this round based on lack of interest (understandably, since one’s a manga and the other covers a sensitive topic)

ikr? I could only vote for 5 books but I’d be happy with reading most of these

I noticed that too! I’d be interested in finding out why they flipped popularity too :eyes:

The poll ended without any last-minute surprises, ans so I am happy to announce that

あん

is our next pick! :tada:

@snowwater would you like to run the book club for it?

I would, but I have never run a bookclub so I’m a bit lost (I wasn’t expecting あん to win when I suggested it!). if you could direct me to a few helpful posts or give me some tips I would be grateful

Hopefully you can find any tips you need here:

Basically you need to create a home thread for the book under Book Clubs, and determine a schedule. After that, you just post each weekly thread when it’s time. The threads follow a more or less set template, which you can find in the above link (or you can just copy from any book club here). If you need help let us know!

This is definitely super helpful already! I might have missed it, but when is it expected that I create the home thread for the book (can I already do it or is it best to wait until its closer to the date?)

I usually say the sooner the better, as it can drum up more interest in the book outside of the main threads, which may not be watched as closely by everyone visiting the forum.

Then I will try to post it tonight and link it here

I hope this works:

Ah, shoot, I literally just bought books and I completely forgot about the club when I did, so it looks like I’ll be joining this one late (quite possibly after it’s finished)

nvm I misremembered about modifications not being allowed for that order! I was able to add it so I should be able to read along :+1:

I’m kinda sad, because I’m interested in reading あん but it is starting just as my IBC primer club is, so it is about… 3 months early for me at least? xD (Not that we’ll have finished the book by then, I’m sure, but we’ll have 12 weeks of reading under our belt, so then I might have felt ready to try it.)

Anyway, you guys enjoy it and I’ll just coast on getting a better idea on how difficult it is to read so I can slot it correctly in my reading pile. :joy:

If anyone is also interesting on easier reads, the BBC just opened up the vote for their new pick!

I finally managed to update the proposals list. Sadly, three proposals had to go in this round due to lack of interest:

On the other hand this means that we now have seven (!) free slots that are waiting for your proposals! So please feel free to nominate new books or manga any time

There’s a book I’ve been really wanting to read and I think it may work for the intermediate book club. I’ll think on it a bit more but may be putting in my first book proposal!

Sounds great! If you’d like to get some feedback beforehand, you could just let us know the title and maybe somebody else knows it already and can comment on its suitability?

Sure! It’s 推し、燃ゆ. It won the 164th Akutagawa Prize and was a big deal a few years ago (so many news segments covering the book and 推し活 haha) so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few people here who have heard of it!

It’s only 144 pages so it’s pretty short, but it is level 36 on Natively so higher than most of the other books that have been done here. (https://learnnatively.com/book/2ebe995230/)

I’ve read the first page or so before and the level was okay for me personally. Only reason I haven’t read it yet is I’ve been trying to get through some other books on my shelf, but a book club would give me a good excuse to start it early lol

I vaguely remember this one being mentioned in one of the threads (@rodan - san?), but not sure if it was ever nominated and/or read in a book club.

EDIT: Almost ninja’d by @NicoleIsEnough

Oh, I see! Just two months ago, an informal reading group was formed for the book, so I’m not really sure whether there is still so much interest in the book for the Intermediate club  Also, people seemed to think that it was a bit hard to read, at least initially.
