I work for a Japanese company in the states and pretty regularly go to Japan now, and just recently passed the N1.
I can’t write anything other than the most basic kanji by hand. But computers and phones make writing in Japanese extremely easy. If I ever life or death needed to write something by hand in Japanese it would be in hiragana.
