How to wanikani?

hi..

new to wanikani it was coming up on lots of the “japanese resources” videos i was binge watching lol. I was curious about it, logged in then got confused. I am answering correctly but I don’t know why some radicals are shown “meaning” fins for example or prison or power.. I keep trying to figure it out even if i get it correct but I am worried the wrong idea will be stuck in my head instead of what am meant to learn about kanji..

is short… how should i use the wanikani represent.. it’s still very early but am sitting here looking at the reviews not sure what to do with the info am learning atm lol. Also… I see people talk about scripts? sorry if its just another new confused user but i want to know i am going the right direction.

thank you in advance ! <3

The meaning of WK radicals is purely for mnemonics.
As I understand it, you haven’t had any kanji lessons yet, just radicals. Things would start getting clearer once you get kanji lessons – then you would see how the radicals’ names are used to create mnemonics for the kanji. And then you would later get the vocab lessons that wouls combine the kanji you know into vocab.

Just keep doing your lessons and reviews – and everything would soon become clear!

As for userscripts – they are not necessary; just something various people write to add more features to WaniKani. For now, I’d recommend not bothering with them, until you get accustomed to WaniKani itself, although that’s just my personal opinion trunky_rolling

Anyway, welcome to WaniKani – I really hope you’d like it here and stay with us! love2

In any case, best of luck with your studies! wricat

If I can also add, this website exists with the basic tutorial : Doing Your First Lessons | WaniKani Knowledge

Do not worry too much about scripts for now, just do reviews / lessons on time everyday, and after level 5 / finding your rythm, you can start thinking if you need more scripts or tools
The forum is always here to help in any way

The Radicals (NOT kanji themselves) don’t actually have English names, I don’t believe. I think the radicals, not kanji without English names are just up for discussion, and naming them helps with memorizing them. Also, right now you are not working on Kanji, you are working on radicals, which are pieces of those kanji. Also, im just starting out as well and this is my probably incorrect opinion on this. Good luck!
