How Many Lessons Per Day

Sometimes when I let them pile up (like right now) I’ll do them all in one day. I currently have 128 lessons, and I will probably do all of them tomorrow. I’ve set my lesson increments to 10, so it’ll take 13 sessions. It would be a bit silly to do them all in one go, because then I’d get a review nuke 2 hours later. Instead, I’ll do one set of 10 every hour throughout the whole day, and then I’ll only have tiny reviews of 10-ish items to do every other hour, and a slightly bigger one the next morning.

Long story short, it’s possible to do a lot of lessons if you’re willing to make the time to pencil them in at regular intervals.

A word of caution about doing high numbers of lessons per day in the lower levels - you’re going to be hit with a tsunami when those items start coming back for burn reviews in 6 months. I suspect it’s a big reason why many people drop out before level 30. If you’re more advanced and already pretty familiar with kanji before starting (and you have lots of time for study) it will probably not be as bad than if you’re more of a beginner.

It looks like it takes a little less than ~30 per day to go at maximum pace, so that’s what I averaged out to. For the first six months though, I pretty much did every lesson as soon as I could manage to. Afterwards, I realized that I could space things out a little bit more evenly while maintaining the pace I wanted (doing this evened out my daily workload considerably).

Also, I just wanted to add that if you’re doing ~5 lessons per day, there’s nothing wrong with that, but at that pace it will take ~5 years to unlock everything, which may or may not be longer than you’d bargained for ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All of them the same day they appear. But my case is different - I used to know about 600 kanji (studied from books), had to take a 2-year break and forgot lots, then started with WaniKani. At first all were familiar, so large numbers were not a problem, but now (at level 13) the amount of new ones is starting to increase. This speed is still ok, but am prepared to slow down if necessary.

Useful trick: up to guru level I read through the list of apprentice items before every WaniKani review session. That way there aren’t many misses and getting to guru is fairly quick. After that - no studying of those items, so I know if I actually remember them. Developed a habit of taking a screenshot of the list of failed review items and occasionally going through all the screenshots, makes re-forgetting less likely. (Even then, there’s a couple that I keep getting wrong, then right, then wrong again. XD)
Good luck and strength to everyone in your studies!

I think my average is 23 per day, although if I remember corrtly, in the first 30 levels or so, I did all the lessons at once when they were available.

After that I was trying that my apprentice items were around 150 items, and now that I am in the fast levels, at around 175

The way i look at it is to try and keep my daily reviews to a manageable level, if i am not getting through them then i calm it down on the lessons. I think it is important to get through the reviews, otherwise you add new content to them whilst forgetting the old.

I reached lv 4 yesterday and had 63 new lessons… I did them all right away, and it seems that I retained everything xD But I knew a few of them already, either meaning or pronunciation, so it helped.
I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to continue like that in the higher levels though.

Would you mind sharing what script/app are you using to keep track of your average daily lessons? :star_struck:

I try to keep my “Apprentice” number around 100. Sometimes that means I go a few days without any lessons, sometimes that means I’ll do 30-40 lessons in a single day. I also do all of a new level’s radicals and kanji as soon as they unlock.

It’s working well for me so far (and going based off of how many are “apprentice” means that I’m only adding new things when old ones have started to stick).

If I get 85%+ on morning reviews, I’ll do 10 new lessons. If I get 80%-85%, I do 5. If I get less than 80%, I do no new items.

I have lesson limiter set to “120” which according to me seem like a “bearable” rate of about 20 review every hour every day.

This gives me an average (so far) of about 9 lessons per day, but i’d say my average is dropping, i typically get 5 lessons everyday, with occasional 10 lessons days and very rare 0 lessons days. It depends how quickly I manage to guru new elements and how few I keep from dropping back there.

I do all lessons available and…

This usually happens T.T

For a while I was doing them all as soon as they came available, but the result of that seemed to be enormous review sessions. I’ve since been trying to keep my apprentice under 100…So if I have say 85 apprentice, I’do at most 15 reviews. If I have 92 apprentice, I only do 1 set of 5 reviews.
