First, you start with radicals, which are the building blocks for kanji. When you learn a radical, it unlocks kanji that use it, and when you learn a kanji, it unlocks vocab that uses it. To level up, you need to Guru 90% of the kanji in your current level
For example, I’m currently Level 9, and there are 40 kanji in this level:
Some kanji are still locked because I haven’t Guru’d all the radicals that make them up:
But the progress bar shows I only need 36 kanji to level up, and I currently know 4:
This is because you don’t need to learn all 40 kanji to level up, just 90%. Also, vocab doesn’t affect leveling up, it’s just there to reinforce what you’ve learned
