Have you been thinking in Japanese?

Just premonition with unclear picture, is it? As for me, the sound doesn’t always come up. (And, if it comes up, it just makes thinking slower.) It is just the matter of prioritizing Clarity vs. Speed.

It’s really an interesting thing. I tend to think visually as well. So typing this sentence is odd since I have to think of the words as I type. One of the oddest things, that made me extremely happy, is when I had a dream and on the signs were kanji. So I know the language is getting in there, but I don’t necessarily “think” in the target language. (Unless I’m mentally talking with myself. Everyone did that right??? Not weird at all?)

It would seem that @KuzunohaXIV is describing “strong visual/spatial thinking”.

There is a document [1] by the research person. It has a little quiz to test your “Visual-Spatial Learning.”
It’s in Comic Sans though, so I wouldn’t trust it. I think it’s meant for kids, so they can test them at early ages.

I got a 15! So hooray!! (Wait.Am I supposed to be proud of that? Well, I am anyways!)

On this topic, this is kind of strange… I answered No to only 3 or 4 questions (I was on the fence with #5)… making my score 14 or 15 depending…
Yet I totally answered “NO” to the first question because I totally narrate nearly everything I do and think in words for sure. *tilts head* I even think about what I’m going to think about before thinking about it.

How interesting!
I’ve always thought myself to learn best with audio+visual at the same time… but… wow, that’s a lot of visual.

Honestly the idea of thinking in pictures and abstractness fascinates me. I feel like that’s impressive, in it’s own way. : D

I can say that it’s a blessing and a curse.

Good things I remember very well. Spatially I can place myself exactly where I was and how I was feeling and the moment is almost like I’m there again. (This is more specially true of stronger memories.)

Then again, as you guessed, dual edged sword. I can relive the bad things over and over just by thinking back to them.

The amount of data that can be processed seems to be much faster. I hate writing things down because it is 1/1000 (wild guess to make point) of the speed that I can come up with what I’m trying to say. Ask me about a character for something that I’m creating and I can tell you their age, build, eye color, hair color, personality, likes, dislikes, history. Because that’s what people are. (I really dislike shallow character development in media because of this.) People are stories.

But in how that translates over to learning…

Storylines. I can read them once and remember
then for years because as I’m reading I’m building what’s happening in my head visually.

Comics. I can remember what things looked like better than what was said. Sometimes I realize I’m rereading something based on what I see, not what I read.

Kanji…
Text. Text text. I have a pretty good memory, but I can’t really convert this visually in my head. Even with the mnemonics. I just have to do rote memorization.

Anyways, that was a long post that probably is boring.
ヾ( `ー´)シφ__

That wasn’t boring.
I think I think very similar to you. Especially when it comes to storylines.
I see movies as I read books. I remember scenes from movies more accurately than friends around me. For years and years. I even remember (visually, and sometimes with the jingles) commercials from my childhood.
Those things the first page of the paper said “if your kid does them, they’re probably spatial” - I did (except for counting everything - that was my younger sister). I also took apart our TV stand/cabinet and laid out all the screws and hinges and doors at some point in Kindergarten or younger… and then put it all back.

But at the same time, I still think in words. Typing can nearly keep up with my thoughts. Hand writing cannot. \_( )_/

Taking things apart and putting them back together ftw! Always loved doing that.

The most funny thing is that when I think words a lot of time I’ll actually see the word. Like my brain is saying, hey, why are you doing that, here’s a picture!

Hmm…

Although, that’s kind of how I remember to spell things correctly. I mean, phonics are in there, but I also go “that doesn’t look right” and then correct it until “that looks right”… based on the 1000s of times I’ve seen the word in reading (I used to read more than I do now… but I’m still a fairly avid reader… I think University and later slowed me down.)

We’re both getting pretty off-topic though. Should we continue this elsewhere (perhaps Longest Thread?)?

Point the way!

I don’t know if visio-spatial thinking is the reason for my strange wording / phrasing, even in my native language.

And, it may help in math, programming and other abstract stuff.

I love the way you phrase things.

If your words are sufficient to get across your intention or idea, then the organisation of your words isn’t important. As long as people understand what you’re saying, your grammar doesn’t matter.

I spend too much time trying to create an appropriate phrase to convey what I’m trying to express from my mind that the sentence loses it’s viscosity… or it’s weight… or it’s original intention.

Maybe this is a good example of that.

I currently live in Japan as an English teacher (who knew no Japanese and not much about Japanese culture before getting here), and to me, you’ve hit the nail on the head about what impresses me so much about the Japanese language. What you say is “cutesy” and “over complimenting” to me is more like a level of total INVOLVEMENT and caring with other people. Sometimes English is so “cold,” as you put it, that you can get away with spacing out and not truly listening to people - saying only “mm-hm,” etc. However, in Japanese - people might be faking it, but their responses at least SEEM truly authentic and involved. Like the way they go えええええーーー?! or そうですね!Or the exaggerated かわいい!or かっこういい! Like you have to be really LISTENING to say those things at the right time!

It does seem much more expressive and cartoonish then anything I’ve ever said in English, but when I find myself saying or thinking these things even in English conversation, it makes me more invested in what other people are saying. I hope this makes sense!

The thing is that I don’t think I’m a very strong visual thinker either, even if it’s probably better than my verbal thinking. I only got an 8 on the test. I honestly didn’t know what to answer on most of the questions, such as “can you feel what others are feeling?”. When trying to visualize things, I find it mildly difficult, but it’s a little strange because I’m actually pretty good at puzzles and stuff. My brain is weird, lol.

I wonder about the connection between bad handwriting and visual thinking. My handwriting is very ugly, though not so bad that it’s impossible for others to read. On the other hand I’m pretty good at drawing. I can’t remember things from my head and draw it on paper, but once I’ve drawn it a few times with a reference I can do it much better.

Er, this is a public thread, and something too psychiatric should be left unsaid… probably. It’s not that it is bad, but the status of it in the society is “controversial”.

Oh, sorry, didn’t know.

I don’t see a problem with what @KuzunohaXIV said at all, I won’t repeat it now that it’s been edited, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of or hide, and it shouldn’t be detrimental to be open about it if that’s what the person chooses.

I agree with this. We’re all grown-ups here, we can choose to share or not to share our personal experiences or characteristics. It’s not a crime, so nobody should be disturbed by it.

I believe it was just intended as a reminder. As polv said, this is a public forum, it is possible that a future of employer, or something of the manner, finds this post and makes a discriminatory decision. It might be highly unlikely, but it is important none the less to keep a certain level of discretion on the Internet.

That’s something that private messaging would be useful for, to just send a heads up that this section of the forum is searchable. I just wanted to make sure that kuzunohaXIV didn’t feel pressured to remove it, or feel that they did something wrong, since they apologised.
