Finally decided to make my first post! I just started Level 1 and I’m officially on the board! Honestly, I’ve already been at level 1 since I dunno..maybe 4月19日 and just discovered this forum recently and just didn’t know how or what to post about yet…(╥﹏╥)
I’m a big fan of anime and K-pop, so if anyone has good music or immersion recs, let me know! The mnemonics are already a bit weird, but I’m kind of into it.
Looking forward to learn with you all. よろしく!さらバイー!
Does it usually take so long to level up or am I just slow? (˶˃⤙˂˶)
Welcome! This forum is a rare and special thing on the Internet, an actual supportive community with a lot of really awesome people. And me, too.
In terms of leveling, the way you level up is guruing a certain percentage of the kanji for the level, and since guruing requires passing from apprentice 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 first, it definitely takes time.
The amount of time between reviews for level 1 and 2 are accelerated so you can actually level up quicker than most levels. But considering you have to generally guru some radicals each level, and then some of the kanji those radicals unlock, for most levels beyond 2 the bare minimum time if you’re speedrunning and 100% accurate is about a week per level, though there are some that can be done quicker thanks to enough kanji being unlocked.
More importantly, though, is that we all have our different learning styles, available time, memory, etc. How fast or slow you get through a level really is going to differ for everyone, and sometimes faster is not better (as the review pile I had in the mid teens levels after doing 20 lessons a day and ~10 day levels was pretty heavy and I found I wasn’t doing things like reading, listening and grammar to help actually learn the language better).
In any case, it looks like you’re doing good and finding your way onto the forums is great. Feel free to ask any questions or advice when you feel like it, but my standard advice is to always remember why you want to learn the language and keep that in mind as you adjust your study plan - and you most likely will adjust it a lot as you find what is working and what isn’t. Change and temporary setbacks are just part of the process, the only failure is giving up.
She is doesn’t just know ADO so be careful or you’ll start sending out blue hearts before you even realize
Welcome to the commeownity ! The forums are the best thing you can get out of wanikani as the diversity of topics , resources , people , challenges , appreciation threads , activities is too much ! Too much I say ! I shall warn you that becoming addicted part of the commeownity comes with the risk of missing reviews (I miss them so maybe you will also ) and offending the crabigator so try to avoid burnout and enjoy the ride !
Best of luck for your journey into the world of 日本語
Thank you so much for explaining! I hope your fingers didn’t hurt writing so much lol, I’d feel bad. I study daily because I’m scared that I’ll forget everything, especially because I often forget things very easily. And- DAYUM Level 29? I-..HOW? I feel like a noob with my level 1- (╥﹏╥)
Nope, fortunately I stretched my fingers out properly (well, technically not formally but I type a.whole.lot.like.really.way.too.much so it’s no problem at all, for me at least, I can’t say those who read my musings always feel like they got their money’s worth, which is pretty bad since I don’t charge anything and… well, you see what I mean now!)
In terms of newness, yes, you’re in your first week. I was in my first week last March, and I’m still new compared to some of the longtimers here. And maybe in a year you’ll be in the 20s or 30s and someone new will come on and you’ll greet them and share this bit of “wisdom” with them: you’re not a noob, you’re an expert in training.
