After almost 3 years, I finally reached level 60 ![]()
When I started learning Japanese, kanji were the part I dreaded the most. They were the reason I didn’t really progress for a while: I wanted to be able to read as well as speak the language, and kanji felt like an impassable wall. My motivation to learn didn’t last very long.
Then I heard about Wanikani, and it quickly became obvious that it was the way to go. The base method is quite similar to Remembering the Kanji (radicals and mnemonics) which I had already tried. What made the difference is the SRS on top of it.
Progressing in Wanikani was quite fun, and a daily challenge. It was interesting to experience that intensely the quirks of memory and how certain things stick while others don’t.
I certainly don’t regret it, and I feel I’ve acquired a ton of knowledge that will be useful down the line.
I plan on burning all the remaining items, but the next step for me is focusing more on grammar and actual reading through games and books.
A few stats:
I don’t remember exactly what happened at level 8, but I think I struggled a bit (or got very lazy
)
And a bunch of items I really struggled with:
| Item | Incorrect meaning | Incorrect reading | Total reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| 孝 | 8 | / | 35 |
| 釆 | 8 | / | 37 |
| 夫 | 7 | / | 33 |
| 働 | 9 | 13 | 134 |
| 努 | 10 | 9 | 129 |
| 床 | 7 | 12 | 125 |
| 請ける | 29 | 8 | 237 |
| 別れる | 9 | 25 | 204 |
| 迫る | 1 | 27 | 154 |
Thanks for reading that far, and good luck to you all on your own journey.
