Okay, so the constantly changing radicals for kanji I’ve learned before are REALLY throwing me off. It feels like I’m being forced to alter my understanding of multiple kanji halfway through the game, and it feels bad.
The new ‘outfit’ radical now being in kanji where the mnemonic was ‘spirit’ before, is one thing. But the fact that the old mnemonics are just GONE is really hindering my learning process, I feel. I have the “there are spirits to supplement the guests your wedding” mnemonic in my head for 補. But now when I check the 補 page, that mnemonic is just GONE. There’s no way for me to go back to it. My learning is very dependent on the mnemonics, and I hate that they’re being changed while I’m still learning.
so my suggestion is: Is it possible to keep the old mnemonics somewhere, for people who have learned a kanji with radicals before they changed? (Please let me know if I have to mail this to support instead)
I don’t know if its possible, but I do kind of agree it’d be nice to see old mnemonics since a lot of radicals have been renamed since I started and I have to relearn them whenever I encounter a kanji using one, or I make up my own mnemonic. I will never forget you, pelican.
I am so sick of WK changing the radicals out from under us. I don’t care if 衤 is slighty different from ネ. I’m never hand writing any of these kanji. It’s just creating more variations where I might mis-read the radicals and make it harder to remember down the line. And replacing the mnemonics means I have to learn a new mnemonic from scratch.
WK staff: Please stop meddling. Do features people want like dark mode and let us just use your program.
+1. WK team: if you’re going to introduce new radicals, please do the engineering / product work to preserve the old radical and mnemonic definitions somewhere. This is actively disruptive. I felt like I was hallucinating today when I was doing my reviews.
Yes I also agree; this seems like it’s been quite disruptive for many people here. I too spent some time today trying to figure out what the hell was going on with the outfit and spirit radicals. Giving no notice to active learners of this quite significant change seems like poor judgement. Overall I like that WK is continually updated. But letting people know would help too
They post their changes in the forum and this issue also caught me off guard and created a double entry in my mind. Wasn’t aware it was the old spirit, which actually matches more than outfit.
It makes less sense as outfit.
Any time they make changes and it’s a new radical i just assume it’s new.
I don’t care if they post about it. I want them to lock my database version and only upgrade me if I request to be upgraded. Or stop messing around with the database in the first place.
