Bittersweet Level 60 (Walao, another level 60 post)

Absolutely nothing to be sad about! I’ve been using WaniKani every day since 2018, though obviously at a much slower pace than you. I’m jealous you can just focus on reading native material now! I’m eager to reach that point myself once I complete WaniKani (even now, I try and read native material, though it’s hard to find the time with all the WaniKani reviews in a day). I plan to only read native material and create my own sentence decks on Anki, which I believe will really accelerate my reading and speaking ability.

おめでとうございます!

I read this in Crabigator Speak, and I have never felt so moved. Best of luck on the rest of your journey and keep it up all the hard work

Also, any chance we can get an actual Lv 60 shirt? I love that design and it would be a huge motivation to move at a faster pace :upside_down_face:

I just woke up at 5 am and it took me a good 2 mins to understand what you meant.

Thanks man! I don’t plan on stopping either  But I’ll probably stop now for some coffee though.

Thank you for your kind comment too! But tbh, the soldier (which was me) won’t be able to do WaniKani reviews in the jungle because the reception is bad, to say the least, even if my phone was somehow in range of any tower.

Also, I became inspired to include the speech after reading a book about the Guadalcanal campaign, which was literally in the opposite theatre across the world from Britain but oh well. Good luck to you too and have a nice day :grinning:

Why you gotta do me like that man

Thanks for your comment! Actually, I too started reading during my first year of WaniKani and didn’t have much time.

So I decided that I would read at least 1 page of the web novel I was reading at the time (which took me around 30min, hah my reading ability was really slow) at the start of the day before starting my WK reviews and lessons so that I would at least get some immersion everyday.

Otherwise, it’s fine to just lower your pace to free up time, even if you feel it’s already slow, because personally, I feel that past a certain point immersion becomes more important than WK.

Either way, I can’t comment too much on your study plan because different things work for different people, and if this works for you then keep it up! But to me it looks good, although speaking to some actual people like on HelloTalk or something would be better to practise your speaking.

Growlllll snip snip

Translation for the other people who can’t speak Crabigator:

Unfortunately, there’s no shirt. Although if I get desperate enough, I’ll just tank the price and custom print a shirt for my personal use. Although I must say that I didn’t come up with that design, I saved it in my phone gallery back in 2019 and I forgot where I got it from.

Anyways, good luck in achieving your goals too! And remember that you should only increase your pace if you’re absolutely sure that you won’t burn out from that extra workload; it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Thanks for commenting too! Don’t give up on achieving your goals and keep on pushing allll the way to the end.

Thank you! Honestly, a big reason why I could finish it in 2 years was because of my enlistment. Mainly, it’s because of the discipline forcefully instilled into me as well as the never give up, never surrender spirit, and also the amount time spent idling.

But I believe you can achieve great things too, just believe in yourself and steadily climb to the peak of the mountain that represents your goal!

Thanks! But this 2 year WaniKani journey is a once in a lifetime experience for me in the sense that I only ever want to do it once in my life :joy:, I’ve run out of motivation to climb the 60 levels again.

Thanks for your comment! I’m a bit shy about my skill, so some praise every now and then is very nice

No problem, thanks for your comment! You’re spoiling me with the amount of choices of sweets here :joy:

Hopefully my tips have been helpful and that by being honest, I’m not making it sound like it’s super easy thing to do and anyone trying it out can better manage their expectations.

I don’t plan on going any time soon anyways, I’ll probably just go back to lurking the forums soon enough.

Thank you again, and good luck on achieving the goals you’ve set yourself on your journey too!

Thank you! Funny thing is I don’t, because I don’t really use social media that often and I’ve never really bothered to create one specifically for art.

Although, I’ll probably do it eventually once I stop procrastinating. I don’t really want you to feel like you’ve left empty handed, so here’s a little おまけ for asking

Thank you! It makes me happy that I managed to rick roll at least 50 people

Never had seen that autocorrect before, glad you were able to infer the meaning though.

Thanks for sharing, it was really encouraging to read about your journey. Did you use other tools to learn Vocab and grammar?

Thanks for your comment! I’m a little thrifty so the only paid resources/tools I use are WaniKani and BunPro.

For my vocab, there’s two tools I use: WaniKani and the Internet.

Wanikani is pretty much self-explanatory. The Internet means pretty much any Japanese I encounter online like on Twitter, Discord, etc. (Immersion basically)

I go on a tangent here

The way I see it, there’s two ways to learn new vocab, each with their own pros and cons, studying and immersion.

Studying (Decks, etc)
Pros
Controlled/ tailored to your experience (Easier)

Cons
More likely to never use some of the vocab that you have learned (Pointless)
Sometimes there isn’t context (Don’t know how or when to use it)

Immersion
Pros
Vocab shown in context + more likely that it’s in common use (Depends on where you found the it)

Cons
Since it’s not tailored for learners, sometimes it can quite difficult to understand

Personally, I don’t use core 1k, 2k, etc SRS decks, because I feel my soul leaving my body every time I try it and I gave up. But I do have a mini-deck for words I encountered in immersion I want to remember.

For example, this recent comic from an artist I follow

しっかりしろ!! Get a hold of yourself
やっちまいました… I messed up

These are the 2 phrases I want to remember, as a bonus I got some sweet context and images to recall with (a guy holding a dying girl and a smoking microwave)

Later in the comic I also learnt the word レンジ for the microwave oven.

For grammar, I used BunPro, grammar YouTube channels like Cure Dolly, and again the Internet.

Hopefully this helps, get out there and keep working on the goal you want to achieve!

Click for a short story about my single digit level days

I remember back in 2019 when my level was still a single digit (probably level 3 or 4). While browsing through the forums, I would look at how high all the levels of all the users were (like 18, 30, 42, and yes 60) and think to myself “Wow, will I ever reach the level they’re at? I’m so far away…”

Then I made myself sadder by looking at the Kanji and Vocab progression bar and how the percentage was still in the single digits as well.

Then I made myself even sadder by failing the reading for 三つ、八日、九つ*、etc for like the 50th time and thinking to myself “Wow, if I can’t clear this, how the hell am I going to clear the vocab in the later levels”

*2 years later, I still haven’t burned 九つ

Then I made myself even even sadder by going to Wkstats and looking at the charts and forecast and thinking to myself “Wow, it’s going to take me until next year to learn all the N5 kanji. And look at this 30-level gap between N4 and N3/N2 :upside_down_face: This is going to take forever.”

Lesson to be learnt here is take one small step at a time, don’t give up and keep on treading through thick and thin. And you’ll make it!

Glad my advice has helped you in some way and all the best in your journey to success too!

Don’t let me down :slightly_smiling_face:

What an insightful translation from Crabigatian. Their language has so much nuance that just can’t be communicated in English but the translator did a great job.

Thank you! Indeed, I am more embarrassed about my poor grasp of the language of the Crabigator as compared to my Japanese.

There are a million and one ways to interpret the snips and snaps and whatnot, but I’m glad to hear that I’ve done a pretty decent job of roughly translating its meaning.
