I had a quite a bit of formal grammar instruction in elementary and high school in Canada, but I know a lot of my (slightly younger) uni classmates who didn’t know what a noun or an adjective was.
I’ve never heard of sentence diagramming being taught in Australia. In fact possibly the first time I saw it was in a Weird Al Yankovic video

Where are you from? When I was growing up no one was reading a newspaper until maybe we were 16-17. I don’t think this would be unique to japan at all
In my school in 2nd grade they gave us all New Yorkers and said, “Don’t come back until you understand.”
