A Call for Clarity: Let’s Revitalize WaniKani Together!

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I mean Wanikani isn’t a multi-billion tech company with infinite cash and dev teams. The software dev team is just 2-3 people from what I can make of their Tofugu staff page. Koichi has a kid. Hold your expectations a little… They’re updating the content constantly, I’m pretty happy with that at least. Just today I realized they revised the meaning for 壮行 and a few other words from my review queue, so the content side is always being improved & revised. And that’s the main function of Wanikani, is it not? I don’t understand how there’s been a growing group of discontent people for like, last year or so. Most of their arguments are about quitting after some tiny imperfections and making a huge deal out of it. It’s like applying big tech level of UX and quality assurance to a small team of less than 10 people.

I don’t see the issue with the logout thing if you click the 2-week box. Browsers have features to save and fill in passwords, it’s a button click after that. Although it does feel like a hack for DB spaghetti

WaniKani does one very specific thing and it does it well. I don’t see much need for feature-creep

A “shut up and accept my answer” button would be nice though

But I would actually be pretty interested in a side-project from Tofugu focusing on applied vocabulary. Maybe Clozes

I payed them already. Charity done.

Personally, I’d love to see more progress on WK. Just some QoL changes and fixing things up would be enough for me.

As someone who uses bunpro daily, I see every day how much better things could be. There it’s also a small team but they give a roadmap, updates, etc… The tool also offers everything I need out of the box, while I have to rely on userscripts in WK, so my experience is similar to my experience in bunpro.

Things like dark mode or the undo button are features I need to have a good time, especially in a tool that I use multiple times a day. There are other features like the heatmap for example, which are also great.

You need to relogin to the forum for your level to display correctly after you level up
Afaik, eventually the level would update by itself, but relogining would make it happen immeowdiately trunky_rolling

No, it’s not that slow; it’s actually totally possible to finish it in a little more than a year.
However, things happen and life always takes priority… One of the many great things about WaniKani is that you can choose your own pace and go at it. As long as you keep being consistent – you will get there.

I hope that all those critical posts towards WaniKani won’t scare you away. WaniKani is a great resource and while it could certainly be even better and there were some possibly-not-ideal decisions made, it still remains a great resource. I’d recommend to at least finish the free levels before you make the decision.
In any case, whether you choose to subscribe or not, best of luck with your studies! wricat

I recommend checking out this thread on pacing yourself with WaniKani. While it gives some tips on how to go through WaniKani as quickly as possible, the main focus is learning to turn WaniKani into a routine that fits around your life, as well as how to manage when life gets in the way. It also connects you to other resources to help you along your journey.

Have you just started learning Japanese recently, or are you only new to WaniKani?

I stopped for long times (7+ months) a couple of times and then ended up deciding to go ahead and do it after all and resetting to level 20. (Which, having done that, I think a level reset is a pretty drastic thing most people should avoid, different discussion)

It can be done in right around a year. I think a more reasonable pace for most people would be around 600 days. But there’s no such thing as a “typical” person and it just depends on how much time you want to spend every day on WaniKani vs. other ways to study vs. other things in your life.

The only things I would like personally is an option to remove hiragana words and an improvement to the SRS. I think it’s called FSRS, although I’m not sure how that would work with the level system.

An inactivity logout leads to a demand for a discount? A decline in service? I am still using the site the same as ever. Lack of new features? Threatening to unsubscribe until they add a “dark mode”?

Sometimes I feel like I am living in another dimension.

What do you mean is there some free wanikani thing?

To be fair, you took a lot of liberties with your interpretation there. So, yeah, perhaps you are living in another dimension :upside_down_face:
I don’t think anyone actually threatened to unsubscribe, that was just one interpretation, and certainly not “until they add a dark mode”. And while OP said he’d like to see a discount, I don’t think it’s just because of the forced logout but because of all the things that have been going less than well recently.

There are, for example, Anki decks that are suspiciously similar to WaniKani.
