OK this is totally out of context, so if it doesn’t make sense to you, it’s probably wrong, so just ignore it please
In your translation you are ignoring the のは in a way. I believe that that’s a really important break in the sentence, kind of like this:
でもキキは、(かあさんが魔女だからあたしも、 とかんたんに考える) のは (どうも気がすすまなかったのです)。
The のは nominalizes what is before it (i.e. simply thinking “Mom is a witch so am I”) and makes it the topic of what comes after that (i.e. she was somehow reluctant).
So all together “She was somehow reluctant to simply think “Mom is a witch so am I””.
I have a question on p. 15-16 (V2). Maybe someone can help me.
Wow! It’s a long sentence!
Well, one of my problem is the bold part: the strangeness of it didn’t help? My other problem is: she could immediately take off easily, but got help from her mother with landing. Is it saying that she received instructions before following Kokiri with her broom?
Wait… Is it Jiji saying this?? Can Jiji talk??? Oh geez, I thought Kiki wad just having a conversation with herself, but reading your guys’ interpretations, I think I was wrong. Actually, Jiji talking makes the dialogue make much more sense…
Ha, see I read that, but I thought that they would “talk” like telepathically or something not that we would get actual dialogue. Silly me… Things make much more sense now!
There is a sentence towards the end of Chapter 2 (page 23 in V2) when (assuming I’m understanding this correctly) …Kikis mom is telling her that her broom isn’t good and Kiki responds…
If I remember correctly, she tells her that she’s used to the Mom’s broom and that is why she should use that, I don’t remember anything about the new broom itself not being good. If you’re still not sure post which sentence exactly so that we can help!
ずどーんとしてて = it makes ずどーん sounds (an old used car running is an image that comes to mind here)
(Gonna assume んだもん is clear)
A few sentences prior to that one, at the end of page 22 in V2, Kikis mom says,
Kiki responds and then her mom has a very long sentence where she talks about Flying on a broom that you aren’t used to and more. If you have the book, that long sentence starts with
So, だめ can be translated to “not good”, but in Japanese だめ usually doesn’t refer to “the quality of something being not good” (I say “usually” because meaning depends a lot on the context of a sentence and it’s not one-to-one with English). Its meaning is similar to “this won’t do”. So what she’s saying here is “this broom won’t do [because you aren’t used to it]”, she’s not saying “this broom isn’t good in quality”. (If you already know this and you just happened to use “not good” in that way, sorry )
No, I think this is Kiki being her usual headstrong self.
The narrator was just explaining that Kiki didn’t want to take over after her mom because she wanted to choose her own path.
“I’ll be whatever I want to be. I’ll decide for myself.” Is Kiki’s thoughts. A big clue is the そう思った in the next line. FYI, I’ve noticed that そうis used to refer to dialog that just happened, and こうis used to refer to dialog that is about to happen.
P.s. how does one do that blurred out thing in the forum when proposing translations?
V2 page 16:
I was wondering if ilあおいin 青い感じでした
was maybe using the “fresh , new, just emerged” meaning of あおい。like flying was a feeling of starting something new. Thoughts?
V2 page 20.
I don’t understand the part that says
I read it as Jiji’s dialog, because Kiki answers in the next dialog box. Here’s the parts I see:
きめたらif/when one decides
すぐsoon
の人 whatever “when/if one decides, soon” adds up to, it describes people
だから – because. I assume JiJi is elaborating on his worries. He’s worried about people who…what?
