Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Haha, that formal language. Such fun.

I’m idly curious as to the exact intent of that Council of Mushi. Surely if grandma had been completely mushified as a child, Shinra would never have been born, so was it always their plan that the ceremony would be interrupted in the middle?

I’m idly curious as just what Shinra is really going to do with his wonderous life alone with granny in the wilds…

Save the world, apparently.

いやだって鬼ってたより❓️かったってーか

What’s the missing kanji? 若? It makes sense in context but damn.

若かった

Also, that’s 思って, not 鬼って. And I think it’s つーか at the end, too.

Or is it てしか? What’d しか be, though?

Oh, amusingly that doesn’t really change the meaning of the sentence…

I find the handwriting really rough even by mangaka standards.

No you’re definitely right, I just picked the wrong という contraction when transcribing because they wrote the つ weirdly.

They wrote it almost the same as the て in だって

Yeah exactly, that’s what induced my mistake even though I thought “uh that feels weird” while I was typing it…

I don’t fully get the point of all of this but I feel that the language is not the issue. It’s pretty contemplative so far.

I think it’s probably exploring the idea of would you want to keep living with a loved one who passed if they were also interested in staying on

Yes my incomprehension is more about Ginko’s role and motives. But then again it’s only chapter 1…

Ah, idk if it’s in volume one, but it should become clearer

Future chapter discussion

What exactly are you referring to here? I’ve read the whole series already (in English) so feel free to answer as directly as you’d like. I have fair idea of what you’re talking about, but I don’t want to ask leading questions, because I’m not sure how much you’ve read.

I think I’ve seen all of the anime except for the movie

Summary

re Ginko’s role and motives, the role of mushishi definitely is elaborated more in the anime but I just don’t know how much it’s elaborated in vol 1. As for his motives, I feel like it’s clearer from the story from when he was a child, but I have no clue when that is in the manga.

More future chapter discussion

I think volume one mostly portrays him as an itinerant healer slash mushi researcher. The second chapter somewhat explains why he can’t stay in any one place, but his origin-story flashback chapter doesn’t come until the end of volume three.

Thank you for the clarification!

Yeah I’m very confused on that point. I wonder if it’s the fact that this happened that led to his abilities?

My apologies for the delay! Week 3
