極限脱出 9時間9人9の扉 (Zero Escape: 999) 🗝 Week 11 (Visual Novel Book Club)

Week 11: Starting June 9th

極限脱出 9時間9人9の扉 :old_key: Home Thread!

This is being read as part of the Visual Novel Book Club.

Previous Part: Week 10
Next Part: Week 12 (starting June 16th)

Reading

This week we’re reading five scenes starting from the first square on the left side of the second branch. See further instructions for more details.

Further instructions (not spoilers if you're up to date)

The first couple of scenes immediately following the end of last week’s assignment are largely repeats, so I’m not including them in the overall count. The same goes for the scenes following the second branch. You can make whatever choices you like in those repeated sections, as long as you go through door 7 at the second branch and door 1 at the third branch. Technically there are only four entirely new scenes covered in this week’s assignment, but I decided to end it there for pacing of the next ending next week.

Note: it’s not always obvious when a section ends, so try to keep an eye on the flowchart when you think you’re getting close to the end. Below is a screenshot of how your flowchart should look and where the section ends. Screenshots are under a double spoiler so you can unblur one at a time (minimizing spoilers).

The next scene is a puzzle section so it’s more obvious when this week ends; once it flashes through a few screens and shows the following image you’re good!

General Advice

In the remastered version, novel sections have two reading modes: novel and adventure. The mode you are currently in is displayed in the top right; click on it to swap between the two. Novel mode includes both dialogue and narrative text, while adventure mode includes only dialogue. Which you read is up to you; novel mode generally gives you more information by nature of writing out descriptions of events, while adventure mode is less reading by nature of being only dialogue.

Note: the game will occasionally force you into the other mode. When this happens, you can simply click the button in the top right to swap back; however, if it forces you into novel mode, there may be a reason it does so, so proceed with caution!

Choices

The choices are under a double spoiler so you can unblur one choice at the time (minimizing spoilers). For those of you who would like to go through the game blind as to which choices matter, I am including baseline responses for all choices. However, for those of you who would like to make your own choices where it doesn’t affect story progression, whether a choice is critical or not is marked under a second spoiler below each choice.

Note: the appearance of some choices is triggered by previous choices, so if you pick different responses on ones that aren’t required for story progression don’t be concerned if you don’t see some of the choices listed below.

From what I can tell it seems like major spoilers and puzzle answers are hidden, but proceed with caution!

Puzzles

In case anyone has trouble with the puzzles or that just isn’t their thing, I’m including the relevant puzzle instructions. Of course you’re welcome to ask for help in the thread as well! If you are trying to figure it out I’d recommend asking for hints here first, as the guides are somewhat hit or miss with how much they reveal and how quickly.

Discussion Rules

  • Please use spoiler tags for major events in the current chapter/part and any content in future chapters/parts.
  • When asking for help, do your best to provide context. Pasted text, screenshots, descriptions, etc. Unlike book clubs we can’t flip to relevant pages, so we may need a little help identifying exactly what is being discussed.
  • Feel totally at ease to ask questions or give your thoughts, any time! Clubs live and die by participation, and asking whatever question you have, no matter how silly it may seem, helps others who are reading it and even the answerer themselves.
  • Have fun, and do your best to interpret anything said with as much good faith as possible :slightly_smiling_face:

Slightly shorter assignment this time; it took me about 1h 20min. It sounds like a number of us are somewhat busy at the moment (myself included haha) so hopefully that helps! As always let me know if you have any questions or other thoughts

Hey just to check we’re doing 571 right? I think there might be an error in the text here, since 3 locks us to sub

Dang yeah that was a copy/paste error, thank you!

Getting great use out of skip this week

Love that smart auto-skip in VNs like this; can’t go without it. Bit of another transition period as we work through that middle section with different choices, but we did get a little interesting story from Seven. I enjoy that bit with him and Yotsuba fighting – nice to briefly be back before she was completely distraught. Since I know what’s happening and can’t theorize, not too much else to say, but it was a nice read :slightly_smiling_face:

Finished this week too. Getting closer to catching up. I skipped everything I had played before, or course. Too tedious otherwise.

Frozen Cleopatra/Alice and chemical changes happening spontaneously across the world get another mention. No idea what to make of it. I enjoyed the chemistry puzzle though.

Edit: Hold on - I skipped a week? How? Let me go check what I did wrong… :eyes: I chose door 7 and solved the operating room and chemistry puzzles, then chose door 1 and stopped at the captain’s room puzzle. What did I skip?

II believe it’s backing up to the very first branching point and going through door 5 there.

Indeed. I’m doing that now. It doesn’t matter than I’m doing it out of order, I think?

I’m pretty sure it’s fine, but my memory of this stuff is a little vague at this point and I only ever played the original release which didn’t have a flow chart (had to skip through full playthroughs repeatedly) so if anyone has anything to add, please do.

Okay, all caught up! I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter that I played last week out of order. My flowchart still looks as it should.

Yeah as far as I know it should be fine! At least I can’t think of any particular reason it’d matter, we’re going up and down the flowchart tons anyway :man_shrugging:

It shouldn’t. IIRC the flags can be triggered in any order, the game remembers what the latest state was for each and holds it until we go back to that choice and choose different.

Apologies for the lagging posts; I’ll try to put up an actual thread tomorrow (though it won’t have choice guides since I won’t have played it yet, but I suspect there won’t really be any) but if you want to get started, we’re just playing through until the next ending so it should be pretty clear when to stop. Sorry again for the funkiness!

Organizing a visual novel book club is so much harder work than organizing a book club. So many choices to keep track of, and you always need to play ahead of the club to determine choices and stopping points for the rest of us. Your hard work is much appreciated! :+1:
Don’t stress about the occasional delay, it’s totally fine.
