Happy you are caught up and Wow! I wish I could read this fast. One day…
資料①「行先のない廊下」:
Interesting theory!
資料⑤「そこにあった事故物件」:
This is is all new to me I guess because I haven’t read much manga (mainly because I found the slang too difficult to understand)… I found this Feb 2021 wanikani thread about 義訓 (ぎくん) where @Belthazar posted a link with a ton of usage examples. So cool
Ah nice that you found that thread! I feel like I remembered @ChristopherFritz also making a cool post with a lot of examples but I tried looking for it and no luck
I feel like this version where the kanji spells a Japanese word but the furigana spells an English word is pretty common, but I’ve definitely seen double meanings where both are Japanese words.
(Week 9) I’m impressed with everyone who figured out that the bird corpse was actually a human body! If I was reading this by myself I would probably just read it all at once, going ‘huh, odd’ at all the foreshadowing, without trying to solve it at all, so this is fun
This chapter was very slow for me, with a lot of new vocabulary I added to an ANKI deck (that I will hopefully review one day..)
Week 10 - Ch. 6 – 再生の館
As @esutasan noted, we now know eagle-nosed ヒクラ社長 is involved! So maybe you are right about gramma, @simias. If that were the case, I assume the cult broke up due to gramma’s death. But 筆者 says the 教団 disbanded in 1999. I think みつこ invited 早坂 to sleepover around 2001…two years after the dissolution…I could be wrong…
I love that the first thing you get when you are reborn is あんぱん. But I was expecting everyone to sit down and eat breakfast together at those long tables.
The dead end hallway (Holy Mother’s right leg) reminded me of Ch. 1 Negishi’s 行き先のない廊下 …
I was also wondering about that shouting man who accused the 聖母様 of being fake because his son Naruki died…could this be the boy from Ch. 1 who got run over?
This chapter was definitely a step up in term of vocabulary.
Oops forgot to comment after reading, so it’s not so fresh anymore, but I felt like there were so many important reveals!
We were wishing for a cult, and here it is. Eagle nose is back. The woman shape with a broken leg and arm appears big time.
But yeah, not all is explained yet I guess. Also not sure about your question.
I had exactly the same thought. I think when I first read chapter 1, I already thought that also the 人形 in the parents bedroom belong to some sort of cult, so I believe their parents were part of it.
(And probably all these other cursed houses are also related to the cult)
Well, that was harder than expected and dragged a bit, so I’m a day late.
Me:
Weird cult: Hold my beer
Maybe she retired because she didn’t want to be part of a scam anymore, or the cult had to break up for external reasons, and that’s why the Hikura built the mousetrap house for her. Because she wasn’t useful to them any longer, and might be a liability because she knew too much.
Also, we now got an age for her (“over 50” in 1994, but looks much younger). That means that unlike my previous assumption, she is just about the right age to be the baby in Uki’s chapter after all.
I also wondered if that whole speech about her being a child of sin and losing her limbs because of her mother’s sin means she might be the child of the woman murdered in the watermill and the rich guy who cheated on his wife with her.
That boy was called 裕之介. My best gate for how to pronounce this is Yuunosuke.
Yeah, the doll with the broken limbs fits really well. Out of curiosity, I looked at the floorplan of Ch 1 to see if the house’s shape would have turned into a Holy Mother shape if Negishi’s mom had
gone through with her plan to remove Negishi’s bedroom, but I really can’t see it.
My thoughts exactly (though fortunately, it didn’t turn out to be as hard as expected).
Didn’t expect to find out so much about Naruki so soon.
Lots of other interesting little snippets, too. I guess the uncle was the man who threw a tantrum at the cult hall last chapter? Seems like he was a dedicated follower before his nephew’s death, since he had a creepy wooden doll and even removed a room from his house (what’s up with that? Some sort of sacrifice?). Also interesting that he called the doll “the heart of the house”.
I’m glad everyone else said this chapter was hard, because I was like why is this taking me so long to read
That must be it!
We know that in the Negishi house a doll was found with a leg and arm missing. I was wondering if the ‘living goddess’ could be replaced, and maybe Negishi was meant to be a replacement living goddess, which would be why her parents acted weird around her (because they were going to sell their baby?) But when I think about it more, this doesn’t really make sense, because why would the cult not take her immediately… Maybe Negishi was not her mother’s child at all, but was a child that was rescued from the cult? And she wasn’t allowed to go out into the street because the cult was watching their house or something?
Week 10 speculations re: the @Boodil @soggyboy 名探偵 case files
Maybe this is a story about who succeeds 聖母様 after Mousetrap gramma (aka the baby of the maid お絹さん). Gramma’s first target was Negishi, but being thwarted by the parents, she turned her eye to a 早坂. みつこ, believing it was her right to ascend, pushed gramma. It could explain why みつこ had an extensive book collection on many topics (in preparation for her role). Alternatively, because of something that happened to her mother, みつこちゃん wanted to end the cult activities.
Adding to @Boodil 's child of sin-losing-limbs comment, there is also the cult practice of getting the believers to spend tons of money → this could be some kind of atonement practice connected to the fact that 聖母様’s father was a married rich guy 梓馬清親 (Azuma Kiyochika).
New to me, but it seems that labyrinth spiral walking meditations have a long history in various religious practices and is still used today in various settings. In case you decided that visiting the 再生の館 at the foot of the Yakedake mountains in Western Nagano is inconvenient, this handy Labyrinth Locator map will direct you to the nearest labyrinth.
Wow, another cool link (and cool fact, didn’t know either) Found some in Denmark, yay
One just looks like a painting on the wall but the other one looks like yours
Coming into the thread to see everyone saying that this chapter felt quite hard is reassuring me a bit lol. Lots more lookups than usual that slowed me down, but I can’t really put my finger on what exactly made it difficult in particular. The lack of dialogue surely played a part, but chapter 3 also had no dialogue and that one was fine? Once the narrator got into the 神殿, it went a lot more smoothly.
The reveal of the house shape was kind of cool! Truly the most 変な家 we’ve had until now. I don’t have any other theory to offer except what has already been said… I did have a chuckle about the reporter absolutely baiting the readers with a “want to know the secret of the 再生の館?? Buy the next issue!!” move.
