Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

When I started reading the book, I found it very frustrating to be so slow at looking things up and thus so slow at reading. I actually decided to give up the book after the first day because it took me several hours to read the first 5 pages, and I thought it was a waste of time as I can read almost 10 times faster electronically. But for some reason I picked it up again the next day anyway and pushed through since, and I’m so glad I did!
I started to get better around chapter 4 or 5 already and now I’m more than 100 pages in and it almost just flows!
Maybe because by then there were a bit more interaction between the characters and less descriptions, but I mostly believe it is because my stamina had built up and I got better at looking things up. A bit like if you spell a name on the phone, you can say A like Alpha, B like Bravo, C like Charlie etc. Now I feel like for each kanji, I have found which word makes it the fastest for me to type it. For example if I want to lookup a word with 事 I go for 事件 etc.

Chapter 6 story comments

Interesting with the old (fake?) blind lady. Can’t tell yet if we are still in the setup of the book and describing hotel life (since we’ve already seen several encounters with the customers), or if this is going to be relevant for the main plot.

spoilers chapter 6

I feel like it’s going to be relevant… But it could also be an instance of establishing a sort of trust between our two main characters, leading her to become more willing to consider the guests as potential culprits.

I do think we’re far enough into the book by now to get some leads!

That’s great! I’m happy to hear that you’ve had a good time with the book after all, and that you’ve gotten used to the different medium so quickly.

I feel like 東野圭吾 specifically has a very specific writing style and way of choosing words… If you’ve gotten used to it in one book, it’ll translate very well to other books by him, regardless if it’s in the same series or not.

Haha same with me! On the one hand I was super busy with life stuff, on the other hand I had quite a number of lookups in the beginning but I could only read on the train or in other inconvenient situations, so I found it quite annoying to actually look up stuff, and I almost dropped the book. But ch. 4 started to flow, and I am not quite as busy any more, so I hope I can finally catch up a bit

Can confirm… I started putting words into my Anki deck again, and I found quite a few words that I had only tagged with 容疑者X (the only 東野圭吾 book I read so far apart from this one) but not with any other books :eyes:
(but then again it’s the same with 森博嗣 and other authors, so I guess it’s just a normal thing that each author has their pet words :woman_shrugging:)
