ふたつのスピカ (IMC) - Volume 6

Unlike the poses in these pictures, at least I can physically get into seiza, though. It’s harder to get out of it than into it.

M27 & 28

Hajima struck me as a bit of a weirdo. Why did he agree to be interviewed and then just sat there and gave monosyllabic answers? If being among astronaut students again is too painful for him, he could have just said no.

Same here. It was a bit of a disappointment, because this chapter really got me into the mood to fold some as Christmas ornaments.

No notes this week. Kei going オーシャンよ on page 131 amuses me for some reason, though.

Page 143, Asumi, you couldn’t think of a better phrasing than “When I’m sad, Grandpa gives me something long and straight”?

The room with all the books was really quite amazing. Shuu’s family never fails to disappoint, of course this whole museum used to belong to his family! I was wondering if it is really possible that Shuu has read all the books, there seem to be an awful lot. And some of them are in French!

I’d never really thought about the root of the word supernova, it was interesting how the Japanese word is so similar.

Another flashback chapter this week, though this one doesn’t pre-date the serialisation like the earlier ones did.

Dunno if the book Asumi’s reading on page 158 is real - books called こども図かんシリーズ exist, and kids’ books about space certainly exist, but the combination is common enough to be difficult to google. Certainly books like it turn up frequently enough, but nothing identical.

Page 164, oh, it’s Grandpa, here to give Asumi his long straight thing.

Page 158, 帰りたいけど帰れない happens to be the name of a real song, but as it wasn’t released until 2018, it probably isn’t what Fuchuuya is singing in the first panel (quite aside from the fact that this volume was first printed in 2004, it’s still only 2017 in the in-universe timeline at this point).

Page 168, as I mentioned in a note earlier in the volume, the background character names that Suzunari-sensei is calling out here are all stations on the Chuo Line (in this instance, they’re specifically from the Ome branch): Tachikawa, Akishima, Fussa and Hamura. Hence Fuchuuya muttering 何線だそりゃ in the second panel.

Page 184, pineapple, uh… dismemberers exist, but I can’t find one that looks exactly like this one from a casual google.

Page 186, Yaginuma musing about メロス and セリヌンティウス is a reference to the 1940 Japanese short story 走れメロス, which is a reworking of a 1799 German poem Die Bürgschaft, which itself is a retelling of the ancient Greek legend of Damon and Pythias.

I had a listen, definitely not the sort of catchy song that someone would be casually singing. In contrast, the song that a character was singing in an earlier volume - 私たちの望むものは is still going round in my head. I mean, it went on my summer playlist so it’s self-inflicted…

They sure do! What you want is something like this. You can then twist down to remove the central section from the husk, followed by using the circular part to slice the pineapple (or just use a sharp knife).

Wow would not have got that reference!

Another reference I wouldn’t have got. To be honest I’m still just happy when I recognise ぬ in its katakana form!

I didn’t really enjoy this flashback any where near as much as the previous ones. Except seeing 府中野 drop the bin to get Asumi out of a tight spot, that was nice.

Yah, it’s pretty much just タヌキ and occasionally ヌードル which use it on a regular basis.
