Oh damn that’s a deep cut, how are we supposed to remember a one-off character from 8 volumes back lol. Also, looking back at the volume 2 art-style, it is incredible how much smaller present-day Asumi has gotten over time, even though she is supposed to be older now. She got flanderized

Mission 52: This has been an interesting direction for the plot. I read the chapter from volume 2 again, their friendship seemed very intense but very brief. Clearly made an impression, Shibata seems like she was constantly bullied and friendless at that point and was grateful to finally have another child as a friend. And then quite painful to have that friend torn away.
I’m with Shuu, Shibata’s story is very suspicious, if not completely transparent. On page 169 we could see she hid something behind her back when Asumi arrived, but I don’t think we’re supposed to be able to tell what it is.
I’m not sure about Ringo letting an unexpected stranger into Asumi’s room while she wasn’t there!
