congrats on hitting level 10! :tada: :tada:

I love all your graphics, they’re so cute.

I’ve also done some Coursera stuff before and always enjoyed them, but I usually just take the reading lists from the syllabus and then work on those at my own pace. If you aren’t going for a cert, I don’t see a ton of value in doing the class participation and quiz stuff, but that’s definitely my own opinion  They tend to be at most like 100 or 200 level college course material, largely just introduction to x topic stuff. Useful for when you need it, but if you’ve already gone through enough college level courses the pace can be kinda slow to get to the stuff you actually want to know.

If you’re interested in mooc stuff, MIT opencourseware has some cool resources too, including some japanese stuff and some stuff that goes way beyond intro level (some courses have full video lectures, some are just syllabus and discussion notes/slides, so it varies)

I started watching one of the kanji videos:

While I would have had a difficult time using it alone to learn kanji, by combining it with my WK study it could be an effective supplement.

thanks !!

yea i’m not sold on having to do the quizzes but it’s not like they’re hard. I’m just in it for this one course then probably will back off unless another one strikes my interest. felt “learning how to learn” may be good to look at since I am indeed trying to learn a lot rn

the MIT stuff is such a good recommendation ! honestly having that much free content is golden. not sure if I can mentally fit it in rn but I’ve been looking around their courses and it could be some good supplemental stuff in the future. i bookmarked it so that maybe I won’t forget about it :upside_down_face:

week3

Hello hello hello !

Week 3 update… hmmm. I feeeel like I was more consistent but did less each day but I guess that’s the point ?

Wanikani still feels punishing because I’m now getting master-level words that I haven’t seen in literal years that I know but don’t know know, ya know? And then those get pushed all the way down to apprentice level on top of my terrible spelling. IT’S THE KEYBOARD. I swear! Always adding extra alphabets to anything and everything that I write. I’m also dyslexic though sooooo I have my apprentice level hovering around the 100s now though so that’s good. Been doing 10-15 new lessons a day, for the most part, to ease back into creating a smorgasbord of words to become my new leeches.

Still not the best at managing textbook time. I am midway through chapter 10, but I rounded down. Going to work on it today to make sure that I stay somewhat on track. In order for me to finish it by the end of next month I need to get to chapter 14 this week so fingers crossed on that.

I have terrible retention.

My vocab yes, horrible. I feel as though I can’t retain anything or if I do know it, it doesn’t feel like I know it enough which I guess comes with time, BUT it is a weird brain feeling. I’m seeing words over and over and I don’t know if it’s confidence but I’m always going to my dictionary to look it up just to be safe. Bad grammar retention is starting to peek through in terms of when I see it, I know it, but there’s a buffer error somewhere. Again, I guess in due time it’ll all come together. Think I might have to break out the writing exercises sooner than I thought so I can get everything into practice. Worried about how I can squeeze it in though if I’m struggling to make time for textbooks.

It’s all self-imposed so I get that maybe I’m being a little too rushed with it, but I want to be in a good spot for when I head to language school. I did decide not to take the N4 test this December because I don’t think it’s a good use of my time. I feel like I’ll get too hung up on testing and not progressing and I’ll get held back a bit. I need to focus less on “testing” and not limit my learning to just be all about N4 level material because I feel like it’ll cut into my current study routine. Plus going to language school I can just take the N3 test in July of next year? :upside_down_face: Also I think I’m going to make N1 my goal since it adds 15 points to the permanent residency scoreboard which I think might be my new 5 year goal. That way I’d be able to be freelance in Japan and not have to worry about work visas and the like and then the cost of living will make it easier for me to travel around and back home. okay that latter part is added hopes and dreams but you get the gist

See ya next week :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

week 4

Week 4 was um. rough. BUT mainly because I was sick for pretty much all of it. Studies def took a hit and I feel bad about it ngl. Started feeling bad Monday, Tuesday hit me like a rock and Wednesday took me completely out. I mean I didn’t do anything on Wednesday and I guess I should be easier on myself because I was going through it… but it does feel bad to hit that bump in the road. It’s weird because even from a day off I noticed my smooth brain already starting to forget things. Guess that’s normal?

I changed up my little scoreboard and simplified it a bit to make it more general. Lumping in the Ringotan app with actual writing practice and generalizing grammar instead of just the textbook. Also think that grouping all my little extra things I’m attempting to also do on the side makes me feel less bad about when I don’t fill them in. I have my more detailed list through the week that I check off so I won’t end up forgetting about them and having them get lost in the chaos of it all. And for putting it out into the universe — those amount of blank boxes were starting to make me feel pretty bad.

Finally finished ルルとララのスイートポテト !!! Second book completed on the list and WOW I would not recommend that to someone at my level. That is an N3 book in N5 clothing. Apparently it’s a series too (from checking it off on Goodreads) and it’s just too much new, specific vocab and the grammar points can get a little crazy. I knew it from the start and just decided to power through it but it’s why I went so slow with it. Also, it had kanji but it could’ve actually used more of it. I feel like there’s a very very early stage of everyone’s Japanese journey of being resistant to kanji, but a book like that is the reason it’s important. I’ve also noticed in my N5 anki deck that there are words that pop up and I get taken aback because I’m thinking of kanji and not kana so I have to do a mental double-take of what I’m actually inputting. This book definitely did that to me as well.

Really wanted to get caught up with MnN this weekend but I just couldn’t. Friday I went into overdrive mode and yesterday and today I was an actual loaf of bread. Almost to chapter 12 because 11 is a little easy since it’s pretty much just counters. After 12 there’s a mid-textbook test. It is cool to think that I’m over 100 pages in the textbook on my own because I’ve never been able to commit to a textbook before. Hopefully, I can still get it down by the end of next month. There’s still time, so surely I’ll be able to do it… right? Right??

Almost halfway to level 11 in WK. I’m on this trend of only doing it once a day and tbh not sure how bad that is for me in the grand scheme of things. Finally got down to 0 lessons after a long time though which was nice to see 0 reviews and 0 lessons. Ended up getting some more to unlock though, but felt nice for those 2 days I had it.

Guess that’s it for now. See ya next Sunday :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

ok so i now know that i can’t sync my mobile anki with web anki so i now have 2 different anki decks on my PC:

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2141233552
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/403853876

still not well versed in the anki lifestyle but I can do more on PC vs my iPhone (because currently not in budget to support with the paid version).

for reference, I have these on mobile:

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1880390099
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/523650169

I might ditch the ultimate n5 vocab in general and I’m just testing out the PC ones because I honestly have no idea which deck is best for vocab and I will gladly take recommendations.

also found sakubi.neocities.org from browsing the forum yesterday and started reading it. i think it might be a good run-through just to speckle in some new grammar thoughts especially since I’m already ready. plus I put it into Word and it’s only 81 pages and not like imma be studying off it. not sure if I should check off my grammar for the day if I read a little bit of that but maybe if I read enough?

edit: ok just also added Nayr’s Core 5k (Nayr's Core 5k Revised - AnkiWeb) because I was googling and someone please stop me I have no idea what I’m doing

Week 5 - 8/5/23

Wanikani Level: 10 → 11
Minna no Nihongo Chapter: 11.5 → 12 / 25
よつばと! Vol 1: 112 → 120 / 224

week 5

It’s been over a month now since I’ve upped my commitment to Japanese. Usually, a month is my stopping point when really honing in on things I like / want to do more of and when my self-sabotagey ways start popping out in every corner of my life which I am definitely feeling. Ever since getting sick last week I feel like I’ve uprooted a lot of personal progress from just even eating better and going to the gym which I’ve been really good about since the start of this year. Some shift happened and I think I need to fight back a little better. Maybe I make some checkboxes for that stuff too? o_o Fell off the planner route a bit too so maybe it’s all related. Little personal organizational refresh seems to be in order.

I did hit LEVEL 11 this week !! Super stoked about that. My second level up since doubling down and it feels correct. I think I have about a 2 week per-level trend going on right now. I think that’s… average? Maybe? Hopefully tbh.

Definitely dropped the ball on the textbook this week. Struggling to make time for it. Definitely a personal thing. I haven’t sat down with my pomodoro timer and steamrolled through chapters since the 2nd week which… feels bad man. But if I’m the problem then I guess I can’t complain too much. I did go through some of Sakubi though but I think a challenge here is me not saying “Well, I read sakubi, I don’t have to do the textbook” which… I did.

Didn’t read as much which I need to fix because reading is definitely a major player here. I do think I found my vocab fix though. After fussing around with all my Anki decks I think I settled on Core 2k (shocker) on PC only and kinda am dismissing my phone from SRS duty. I also think this helps my brain association of SRS with my desktop for WK and Anki and to do it only there when I have to. I think the Core 2k (previously linked) has the best format, font sizing, and audio for my personal liking. Oddly finding the font change throwing me off which I think is good irl practice. Didn’t realize how Arial-esque WK is shown and having a more natural JP font in Anki is good practice. The one thing I’m hung up on with this deck is that furigana is only shown after I hit show which I might be able to change but I don’t know if I necessarily want to or SHOULD. I think what’s mainly throwing me off now is easy vocab that I know the kana of and that I haven’t reached my current WK level (ex: 低い, 仕事, etc — although I double-checked and I’ll learn these soon as I’m now level 11). Do I mark words as good or easy if I only know the kana or go strictly kanji or nothing? AND do I get the ‘Learning’ number down to zero every time I study Anki or just do the best I can? I’m a little strict and gladly mark things as ‘Hard’ as many times as I want but it won’t check if off until I mark the card as ‘Good’… what’s the call here? Also don’t know how to quantify Anki progress for this blog since the web app doesn’t have grades WHICH I found out is because AnkiWeb and AnkiApp are different things

In other news, I did work on my Coursera learning how to learn course again this week and did some reconfiguration so I guess I can claim it as another “personal project” — streaming. Long story short, I’ve dabbled in it a couple of times, I do marketing/social media for my work, it’s an experimental output for me to practice on myself, it never stuck, I’m trying it again, etc. NOW I do have to say this could very well be a delay tactic and self-sabotage but even I’m not 100% sure at this point. :grimacing: BUT I have been slowly adding more in my life as I’ve kind of solidified other things. Gym 3x a week :white_check_mark:, food tracking :white_check_mark:, Japanese :white_check_mark:, streaming? :ballot_box_with_check:. I’m going to be more mindful and intentional with it and use it to also bang out some of these things that are filling my “other” categories. Drawabox, freeCodeCamp, and even some curated Coursera courses that I think now (with reflection) I can mesh better with the idea of streaming and not just have it flatline. Of course gaming too but intentional gaming. This time around I think I can fully do what I intended to do in the first place, which is getting better at content creation skills for my job career job thing.

The past 5 days I have definitely used a lot of mental space on recreating these ideas and configuring the intersection with all of this because my learning Japanese is also tied to it down the line. It’s just more of learning how to stay ahead of these ideas and be open to progress. And wow I’m ranting, so glad that no one’s reading this.

Guess that’s all I gotta say?
If anyone is interested in me streaming I guess I could drop the @?
Will I be better at finishing MnN this week?
Will I crash and burn?

Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z !!

Youtube led me to this video on creating/using commonplace books. I think this might be the key to incorporating writing acquisition into my language study. Not necessarily just having a freeform journal/diary entry based on whatever I want. Definitely a non-issue for others, but I think for me it can get too unstructured and easily derail. I’ll always choose the easy route of a sentence structure than challenge myself to incorporate new grammar points. I also think this is where I was heading subconsciously when I purchased the Japanese Dictionary of Basic Grammar and this random video unlocked something in me.

A fusion of the Japanese Dictionary of Basic Grammar series in the linear order of which I’m acquiring grammar via my chosen textbooks, with additions from other resources like Sakubi and TokiniAndy and others, written in Japanese by me.

I think that might be how I amp up my learning and effectively use writing as a learning tool.

Thoughts?
Someone definitely has done this before, right?
How’d it go?

Do you know about https://learnnatively.com/ ? Well it doesn’t have ルルとララのスイートポテト unfortunately, but otherwise a great website to find material to your level!

Keep up the good work, I enjoy your updates and the graphics

Re: Anki
You can put the kana on the front of the cards by opening the html editor and copy-pasting the kana field from the back to the front. It’ll change it for all the cards; I just had this problem as well and learned this fix. :slightly_smiling_face: I opted to not worry too hard about the kanji in the Anki deck, since I’m using WK to memorize kanji and I don’t see any reason to try and brute force learn it on Anki at the same time. Anki is for vocab only for me.

Thanks so much ! And I have been seeing a lot about natively on the forums lately but haven’t gotten into using it around. All the books I am currently reading (and set to read) are ones I physically own and wanna get them completed before I move next year so I don’t feel like I wasted money on them. Might use natively in the future but for now I’m just turning pages and making vocab lists on the Japanese app on my phone

I actually saw your thread ! although I just was lurking and didn’t comment or anything

Honestly, now that you say it like that, brute forcing kanji might not be the way to go. Might be a better use of my time if I did it your way. And it’s not like I’m gonna remember all the vocab just with flashcards anyway and it’ll just be reinforced via immersion eventually. Okay. I’m sold.

Re: the easy/hard buttons - generally people say not to use these buttons because they can really really mess with the “ease” (a hidden metric that helps anki decide when to give you your next review) of cards over time, and make it so that even if you mark cards wrong you still end up with crazy long review intervals, or vice versa, answering a card correctly but still having super short review intervals for it.

I also really liked @soggyboy’s idea of putting readings on the front of the card and just focusing on the meaning. I don’t know if there’s any like, “evidence”, for whether that works or not, but it makes me feel better about doing reviews and makes it easier to grade myself as knowing/not knowing a card since there’s only one dimension to be wrong in.

As for the new cards, you can adjust that to be however many new you want to do per day in the deck settings. I think it’s 20 by default but that’s frankly a crazy number for most people  It’s the same principle as with wanikani, only taking as many lessons/new cards as you can handle, but it’s just a bit harder to see how many you should be doing, since things aren’t nicely broken up into colorful srs levels. At the start you will probably know a lot of the 2k cards, since they are frequency sorted, but 5-10 new cards a day is plenty for most people once they reach the point where they are learning all new cards. (some people are, of course, over-achievers, or just better at remembering vocab, and that’s fine! but play around with it and find what works best for you!)

And for ルルとララのスイートポテト, very impressive! the phrase “children’s book” is kind of a misnomer for language learners, as I’m sure you’ve discovered  Flipping through I definitely saw at least a few N3 grammar points, and it looked about on par with the reading difficulty of the magic treehouse books, which are level 20 on natively, so somewhere in the 18/19/20 range probably. If there’s books you have that aren’t on natively, you can request to add them and then start grading them yourself too!

Wait, what should I use then… I’ve only been using ‘again’ and ‘easy,’ should I use ‘again’ and ‘good’?
