both are meaning mountain climbing. Both context sentences are seemingly about the physical act of climbing.
So, what are the implied differences? There has to be some.

According to this (in Japanese), originally there is no difference in meaning. However, when you use 登山 it is usually associated with high mountain climbing with proper gear and stuff as opposed to casual climbing.
I’ve always been fascinated by those who dig deep into the nitty gritty details of languages at an early stage, since I usually tell myself “don’t waste time on this now, you’ll learn proper usage with context later on, without WaniKani.” (Unless I’m really intrigued)
