CURRENT JAPANESE WEAKNESS:

  • Honestly, all of it.

  • Especially kanji.

HOW I WILL IMPROVE ABOVE:

  • Wanikani

  • I need to find more resources.

#HELPING OTHERS

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:

  • Stick with it! It’ll take seemingly forever and will be pretty damn frustrating at times, but just keep going! Even if you’re progressing slower than you’d like, getting depressed about it isn’t going to help. (Yes, I’m telling this as much to myself as anyone who happens to be reading it)

  • HAVE FUN. Don’t turn learning into work when it doesn’t have to be. LEARNING CAN BE FUN. Make it fun.

#WANIKANI
CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 23!
IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL: 25! Ok uhh I didn’t meet my goal of being level 24 last month and I actually just leveled up. But I’ll do better. probably.

#GOALS:
LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT: “I’m going to try picking up Genki again.”
hahaha.
I didn’t do that oops.

THIS MONTH’S GOAL: My goal is to pick up Genki again. Literally. Pick up and open the book. That is my goal. This won’t be too hard.

#RESOURCES
CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES: WaniKani, KaniWani, Memrise, Genki (hahaha). I completely forgot Yotsuba existed and I neglected reading for the last month. I realized that the problem here most of the time is that I keep forgetting my goals… so I’m going to put them on a sticky note on my desktop! Then I’ll be reminded every time I open my laptop.
Also, I’ve been reading Japanese wherever I find it. If I come across a random article about fish in Japanese I am going to try and read it.

FAVE: KW? I whittled down all the reviews and lessons and stuff’s going good.
LEAST FAVE: Genki.
TRY NEW RESOURCE: This isn’t really a “new” resource but I should really start regularly reading Yotsuba again. So I’ll try.

#WANIKANI

CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 29

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 32

#GOALS

LAST “couple” of MONTH’S GOAL REPORT :

  • In May I totally was overwhelmed by WK and Anki reviews… so I did one month pause, and kept doing only reviews while not adding any lesson. I reached level 26 though , so I’m checking that box :white_check_mark:
Then after one month I slowly started with new less ons both in WK and ANki, but at a slower pace

  • Reading: well I’ve actually readed a lot. I started an account in Bookmeter and while I’m still pending to finish the last volume of Graded Readers 3 (Ask collection), I managed to read the 10分で読める伝記 1年生 book.
Now I’m going parallel. Reading both the last of my graded readers and the 10分で読める伝記 series. Each has it’s own difficulties, but are equally enjoyable. So I’ll check that box too :white_check_mark:

  • Japanese the Manga Way: while still a great reading , I haven’t been too regular. Since I’m learning my grammar on the fly while reading and review it later with the sentence mining routine… well this seems like and extra step, fun as it is, but no necessary to progress in grammar, so, no … I’m yet to read more of this wonderful resource :negative_squared_cross_mark:

  • Getting 90% accuracy in writing kanji up to level 18… not… I dropped the constant kanji writing practice… so far I’m only writing kanji as I do new lessons… in the future I think I will try Skritter and start writing entire words and not just single kanjis… meanwhile that goes :negative_squared_cross_mark:

  • Buying tickets to Japan, September 2018. Yeah baby!! Sure thing :white_check_mark::hugs:

THIS MONTH’S GOAL:

  • Keep reading. Last month was my best month in terms of reading. 325 pages  … Hopefully I will be able to keep a count of around 300 pages per month.

  • Immersion. Well, it’s a tricky thing immersion. There’re a couple of series that I’m using for active immersion (watching once with j-subs, then eng-subs) that later goes to passive immersion (Mp3 listening while commuting).
This weekend I’ll be finishing the first show after like 4 months of starting with it ( I don’t know why it has taken my that long actually, I guess I really like to chew and digest the content that every episode has). It’s Usagi Drop (I highly recommend it), and I really love it :star_struck::star_struck:. I realize now that I get most of the dialogues while listening, and I’m able to watch it in j-subs getting most of the plot. That only 4 months after continuously listening the same episodes and reviewing many of that lines in my sentence mining routine, but even so, it’s incredible noticing that I understood about 20% of the show when I started with the first episodes and now I can watch it with out the re-run with eng-subs (though I’m too compelled still to see what I might have missed) … :slightly_smiling_face:
So my goal it’s to find now another show to do the same process. This kind of immersion it’s a slow process. Going from understading a bit… to a bit more… to most of it… after lots of rewatching and constant listening.

  • I went monolingual!! Gradually I’m making my vocab deck show my the definitions in japanese only. So I no longer have the english version of the word at hand, but the japanese definition, which sometimes narrow the term more than the english tranlation did. Now whenever I add a new vocab, I check for the deffinition in my collection of j-dictionaries. And so far 9/10 times I get a deffinition I’m able to understand (sometimes they come with synonim / antonym as well). I’m really excited to see how gradually I’m not relying I english anymore (not my L1 either), since going from japanese to sometimes an english word that I wasn’t too familiar was messing up things sometimes.

CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES:

  • WK for kanji

  • Anki with this Subs2SRS / Morphman routine for vocab and context sentence mining

  • Graded Readers Level 3 (finishing) and the 10分で読める伝記 series (starting) for reading.

  • Netflix for active immersion and MP3 player for passive immersion.

  • Japanese the Manga Way as cover to cover reading.

  • Grammar references: The Dictionary of Basic/Intermediate Japanese Grammar, and my favorite one: A Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns for Teachers and Learners.

  • Extra: Cure Dolly’s videos and messaging (on Patreon) for doubts

FAVE:
Reading and immersion with shows… there’s nothing better than see those kanjis and japanese happening in some actual material, no longer related to any learning platform.

TRY NEW RESOURCE:

  • I’m reading Japanese Sentence Patterns for effective communication from cover to cover as a refresh before going to Japan next month, so far it’s very practical . Very straight to the point.

#HELPING OTHERS

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:
Check your skills every now and then and put your self out there. After all the kanji, vocab, grammar studying, you actually get better and new and more enjoyable activities become possible. So seek for those, as eventually those will keep japanese a enjoyable activity.

PROGRESS POST #5:
3.8.2018 (first one-month-period after coming back to WK and the monthly challenges)

:bird: WANIKANI

CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 29

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 30

:bird: PROGRESS REPORT:
Previous report: Progress post 4

  1. Level goal: Reach level 29 :white_check_mark:
  2. Grammar: Diligent study of upper-mid Japanese class material :x:
    –> final exam target: > 89/100 (mid-term result: 75/100) :x:
:grey_exclamation: Failed to even attend the final exam.
  3. 外大の日本語5 material onward independently (but no specific chapter goal) :ballot_box_with_check:
  4. Kanji : WaniKani review queue down to “natural” level -eg. no accumulated reviews due to prolonged absence. :x:
    :grey_exclamation: Still at around 600
  5. Reading : NHK news, Yahoo News, articles… not interesting. :ballot_box_with_check:
–> actually short 小説, as found in here , for example.
:grey_exclamation: Kind of compeleted! Been reading random articles as I stumble across them, on top of hoarding novels from Book-off. No internet short stories on the “completed” list.
  6. Vocabulary: Pick up new words diligently from read materials and REVIEW!
(use memrise to create private course for the new vocab?) :x:

What happened:
So I THOUGHT I would be able to invest in Japanese studies, since I finally cleared all my deadlines. How wrong I was! After a week or so of blissfully slowly paced life, I was attacked by a second wave of tasks, deadlines and supervisors breathing down my neck waiting for results.

:bird: THIS MONTH’S GOALS:

  1. Grammar + vocab - 外大の日本語5 material onward independently (but no specific chapter goal)
  2. Kanji : WaniKani review queue down to “natural” level -eg. no accumulated reviews due to prolonged absence - second try.

This month will be consumed with fieldwork preparations and all things related, so I have no way of putting effort into rigorous Japanese studies. Still need to at least maintain, so still some goals to strive for this time, too.

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:

I’m finally back!!

After a small hiatus it feels good to study Japanese again.

These months teached me alot of different things.

One of the most important lesson for me was that in every bad situation there is still something good and vise versa.

It’s true that I almost completely stopped studying Japanese. But because I build a study routine I still used some resources here and there (especially Billingual News).

In the end I really noticed how valuable it is to study languages in general.

So long story short; from here on out I want to proceed further and want to reach at least level 30 by the end of this year.

I’m planning on going to Japan next year for vacation. Until then I want to improve my skills.

I wanted to thank @Yoroshi , @hinekidori and @neicul .

@hinekidori helped me alooot with setting up my anki decks. I’m thankful that he always was ready help and provide advice when it was necessary. His decks helped me bust my leeches and to get a steady pace on wanikani. After I transfered his decks to Kitsun it went smoother for me.

@neicul was also very helpful as always and I’m grateful for his app called kitsun.

@Yoroshi gave me helpful advice for my studies as well.

I’m thankful that I got to know so many people through my Japanese studies.
And I feel good that I can continue from now on.

全力で行くぞ!!

#GOALS
LAST MONTH GOAL REPORT :

  • :white_check_mark: Reached my set goal in WK, doing about 3 review sessions per day until level 32. Now enjoying a well deserved trip to Japan, I’ve put WK on vacation mode. When I’m back I think I’ll change my approach regarding WK, mainly focusing on learning kanji on it, but throwing whatever vocab it offers into my Anki vocab / sentence mining routine, so dedicated time on WK will be less now . … gradually I’ve been adjusting WK to my liking. In the end it’s a tool so I have no issue with having a pile of undone reviews if that serves the porpuse of allowing time to read and listening more.

  • Reading: :white_check_mark: I did the same 335 pages on my Bookmeter account last month, maybe a bit more even, but the extra pages won’t be registered until I finish my current book. So this time I finished the 10分で読める伝記 2年生 book and the Ask Japanese Graded Reader Level 3 Vol. 3. I already bought the rest of the series for the 10分で読める伝記 collection, same for the Graded readers series…. I’m set for quite some time now.

  • Immersion: :sparkle: I did some shows dubbed (Harry Potter, Dragon Ball, and then some others), and the the whole passive MP3 routine with the audio of those. I’m still to find that show to slowly tackle as I did with Usagi Drops.

  • Japanese the Manga Way: :x: so, I’m not reading it much actually. Its fun though, but spending time reading has become a better investment lately.

THIS MONTH’S GOAL:

  • Keep reading. Same amount would be okay. This moth there’re lots of trains to take, airplanes, etc…. Hopefully some of those will account for reading time.

  • Immersion. Well, I’m doing passive immersion a lot… now in Japan maybe even more. As for doing the whole routine with a show, still I haven’t started with it, that will be when I’m back home from vacations, for now I will keep the passive immersion and all the exposure I could get from being in Japan this month.

  • Monolingual routine: both the Anki vocab routine and gradually the sentence mining routine have become monolingual. I’m actually having fun adding more and more vocab to my deck, as now many words come as synonyms of some other words. The context it’s crucial, I’ll remember words much better when the exposition to those words came for example in a book or show, then if it came from WK or a part of a definition of another word I most likely will need a sentence from my shows to put it quickly into use. And now during this trip in Japan if it’s a word a got to use, some one explained to me and there’s a situation I can relate to, the it’s much more cemented. The goal would be maintaining the routine while traveling (I’m doing reviews before starting with the rest of the day). Hopefully I won’t have a backlog of reviews on my return .

CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES:
WK for kanji (vocab from WK will go to Anki an the whole SRS thingie it’s happening there now)
Anki with this Subs2SRS / Morphman routine for vocab and context sentence mining now almost exclusively in japanese
Reading now the Lets Read Japanese Graded Readers Level 2 (similar to level 3 in both Ask and Taishukan series), Taishukan Graded Readers Level 3 and the 10分で読める伝記 3年生.
Netflix for active immersion and MP3 player for passive immersion.
Japanese the Manga Way as cover to cover reading.
Grammar references: The Dictionary of Basic/Intermediate Japanese Grammar, and my favorite one: A Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns for Teachers and Learners.
Extra: Cure Dolly’s videos and messaging (on Patreon) for doubts
FAVE: Reading and Japanese Netflix for immersion, monolingual Anki routine.

TRY NEW RESOURCE:
Going to Japan has been a great resource …. Japanese been used regularly has been a great experience so far.:hugs:

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE: Don’t focus too much on studying japanese; it’s a language, use it, read, listen, talk if you want… in any case, don’t let learning a language become only learning; enjoy things in the language, and the whole routine you do make it enjoyable, or at least gradually more enjoyable .

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:

After a month of getting back into I can just say it’s a good feeling to learn Japanese again.

As an advice I can just say that you should have a good routine that fits YOU.
Choose something you can study best with and that fits in your life.
Try to do it consistently and you’ll see the results soon.

みんな頑張って!! :v:t5:

This thread gotta be one of the most inspiring threads i’ve seen
