Rise and shine, everybody!
It’s already been a week, so it’s time for the next よつば chapter.

Discussion of Chapter 43 starts here.

Remember you can always ask questions about previous chapters.
Last week’s participation was great, so let’s keep it up!

Aww. The chapter ended too soon.

Page 38, exactly what does Yotsuba think that kanji says?

丸 of course!
止 you can see, they’re basically the same.
Although ま does look a bit like 止 :eyes:

She probably knew this word: Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary
And she just went for it. :joy:

Bleh, I tried to look that up but got no results. Maybe I mistyped…

そんなのはいいからちょっとでんわしろ

I’ve done 33, 155 reviews on WK. I’ve covered six volumes of Yotsuba in hand-written notes and translations. I read other books too. But I see a string of hiragana and am lost. (My poor brain). But writing it out here and trying to figure it out really helps, so thank you for bearing with me!

そんな - such
のは - nominalisation
いい - good
から - because
ちょっと - a little
でんわ - phone
しろ - する, do, in the (very rude) command form!

“Because this thing is good (what she was watching on TV), give a quick phone call!”

Thank you for your patience!

こんなもんこうだ

こんな - such
もん - 物, thing
こうだ - is this two words, こう + だ, or is it one word, 好打, “good hit”, which makes sense in context.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

おかいもの じてんしゃでいった とーちゃんと.
じてんしゃは おおきいとこも いける!
そう!

おかいもの - お買い物 - shopping
じてんしゃでいった - 自転車で行った - went by bike
とーちゃんと - with dad

じてんしゃは - 自転車は - bicycle + は
おおきい - 大きい, big
と - and
こも - ???
いける - to be good (at)

そう - yes

  1. I went shopping by bicycle with dad!
  2. Bicycle は big and こも to be good at
  3. Yes, that’s right!

Any help much appreciated!

“Yeah, enough of that - make the call, already!” (paraphrased a little)

Aye, long strings of kana can be painful. In this case, though, you’ve broken it up too finely - いいから = never mind that, don’t worry about that.

Gonna need to check this one against the book when I get home, I’m afraid.

Keep in mind, the speech bubbles on this page are one half of a telephone conversation, so they’re probably only going to be sentence fragments. Second sentence is “With the bike, I can go to big places”. I feel like there should be a ろ in there somewhere, but perhaps I just inserted that in my mind. Either way, いける is 行く potential form.

You’ll never see と as “and” immediately after an adjective, because と as “and” can only join nouns together.

Wow, thank you so much @Belthazar, that is all really helpful! Thank you!

Probably こう + だ, Jisho.org: Japanese Dictionary
“(I’ll use) this thing like this!” (Implying that they’re not using こんなもん with its intended purpose.)
I always have a hard time translating sentences like this. :stuck_out_tongue:
A lot of こう, こんな, そんな, もの, etc.

Probably something like, “Take this!”

A quick check at a translation gives a very good one:

You can arrive at this translation by following Yotsuba’s dad not caring about the phone call because he was hit, and going, “A phone call? Here’s your phone call.”
電話だと?こんなもんこうだ!

As Belthazar said, you can see they’re fragments because of the punctuation.
おかいものじてんしゃでいった!
とーちゃんと
じてんしゃはおおきい【とこ】もいける!

Oh my god :joy:
When I answered your question about 丸まれ, I didn’t get that they were rolling into a ball.
I just thought Ena was like, “I’m out.”
Apparently got it either way.

So, on page 40:
Ena says, “Huh? The phone in Yotsuba’s house doesn’t have a thread/string, right?”
You still need the landline, right?
Ok, this may be Yotsuba, so it makes sense that she doesn’t know. :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha! Yotsuba thought it was a foldable bike.
It really was a quick chapter.

That may be part of it, mind.

I think that’s Yotsuba. “Oh look, those phone cables form an unbroken chain between our phone and Grandma’s phone. … No, wait, our phone doesn’t have a cord.” (Not “therefore how does it work” but rather “therefore it’s not a direct connection”). May also be slightly spinning off from the cup-and-string phones from last chapter, too.

Quite. Where are the unicycle lessons? What happened to Respect for the Aged Day?

Ah! That’s probably it! :open_mouth:
