So, if you say わたしは〜派です, it literally means “I belong to XX group” or "I belong to the group of people who prefer “X” over “Y.”
Common example sentences are 朝ごはんはパン派(I prefer to eat bread for breakfast)です。or 朝ごはんはご飯派です(I prefer to eat rice for breakfast)。
Note: This thread is meant to be beginner friendly. If you are an advanced learner, please be kind by using easy bunpo and putting furigana on the LV6+ kanji by using the following html! ありがとう
In English we say I am a cat-person or I am a dog-person. I wonder if this is a good translation of 〜派です. 朝(あさ)ごはんはパン派(は)です. For breakfast, I am a toast-person. It seems to hold up…
In level 7, we learn 組 for group. Does it have a similar use?
Vocab:
かう: to have (a pet/animal)
〜を かっていますか?: do you have (a pet/animal)?
Answer Cheatsheet:
はい、ネコをかっています。(Yes, I have a cat.)
いいえ、ネコはかっていません。(No, I don’t have a cat.)
どうしてそうおもいますか?
どちらもすきなんですね。
ほかにもすきなどうぶつはいますか?
Vocab:
どちらも: both
すき: like
ほかにも: other
どうぶつ: animal
For dog and cat, I think it’s a good translation, but as I explained in note of 〜派, I usually use “I prefer XXX” for other 〜派 translation.
派 is more like faction, actually. 組 has a different meaning. So, if you say, 犬組, it sounds like “Team Dog” or "Class Dog (school class whose name is dog).
Thank you soooo much for posting something only in Japanese! You’re brave, and don’t worry if you make mistakes. That’s how people learn. I just made a new embarrassing mistake last night. I was asked if school should engage in character education to instill moral and value in children. I thought they’re talking about anime character in education…like Doraemon, Superman, or Sailor moon, so I said using characters has a lot of great effects and explained why…it was so embarrassing when I found out what character education actually means, but thanks to that, I now remember it very well. lol:)
Anyways, going back to your Japanese, I just want to pick up 2 points to make your writing better:
Learning Point
Past Tense
です → でした
子供の時ネコが大好きですした → You’re talking about your childhood, so this です should be past tense でした. It’s the same as ずっと 好きですした.
Vocab
今はもう〜: もう〜 by itself is commonly used, but when you want to say “now I’m no longer ~” compared to the past, it’s more common to say 今はもう〜 altogether. Here are a couple examples.
今はもう犬はこわくないです。
Now I no longer fear dogs.
今はもう大丈夫です。
I’m okay now.
今はもう何もききたくない。
I don’t want to hear anything now.
Hope that helps!
And here is my reply:
犬がこわくなくなったようで、よかったです。わたしは犬が大すきです。
ネコをかってるんですね。
三びきの、名まえはなんですか?
Vocab:
かう: to have/own (pet/animal)
かってる/かっている: to have/own (pet/animal) currently
合ってますよ!(Yes you are correct!)
派は「は」とよみます。(派 is read as HA)
