Words of the day
- あどけない = childlike
- トンボ = dragonfly. Kanji form is 蜻蛉.
- コック = a chef. It is also called this way in my native tongue.
- しがらみ = ties of obligation = 柵. I see as 仕絡み.
- おめかし = putting on makeup. Verb form is めかす.
- あぶる = to roast; to grill / to warm (hands); to dry (clothes). Kanji form is 炙る / 焙る.
- しおれる = to be dejected; to droop down. Kanji form is 萎れる.
- 衰える = to die down; to decline. 劣る is just to be inferior to
- 負ぶう = to carry child on one’s back
- ~銭 = 1/100 of yen (円)
- 九谷焼 = Kutani porcelain
- 芥子坊主 = a children hairstyle. Probably looks like opium fruit (芥子の果実).
- 髷 = top knot hairstyle. Has Furigana.
- 簪 = ornamental hairpin. Has Furigana.
- 幾何学 = geometry. First Kanji usually means how many.
- 過多 = excessive; too much
- 殺生 = cruel. Unexpected Kanji reading for 殺 too.
- 至福 = extreme bliss
- 存亡 = life or death
- 悪戯心 = desire to make mischief. First part is just 悪戯, but I failed to recognize without Furigana.
- 維新 = reformation, e.g. 明治維新.
- 厚意 = kindness; favor
- 温厚 = gentle; mild-mannered
- 悲壮 = tragic but brave
- 重責 = heavy responsibility = 重大な責任
- 悲恋 = disappointed love
- 初潮 = first menstruation; menarche
- 結髪 = hairdressing; hairdo = 髪を結うこと
- 蝉退 = powder made from roasted cicada (蝉). Also, 蝉退.
- 小麦 = wheat
- 大麦 = barley
- 麦こがし = parched ground barley powder = 麦焦がし, that is, being 焦がす.
- 澱粉 = starch
- 干菓子 = dried confectionary. Not dried is 生菓子.
- 集会 = meeting; assembly
- 散策 = a walk; a stroll = 散歩. 策 means a rod or a cane in this case.
- 後頭部 = back of head; occipital region. 側頭部 = side of head; temporal region
- 真葛 = Kadsura japonica. A creeper plant.
- 腹に据え兼ねる = cannot suppress one’s anger

- オロシヤ = Russia, in 江戸 era.
- モロコシ = China (in the past). Simply use Kanji 中国 in context.
- Normally, モロコシ = sorghum (I am not good with this one in English, but I know in my native tongue.)
- トウモロコシ = corn; maize
- 東照宮 = any Shinto shrine in which 徳川家康 (1543–1616) is enshrined. He was deified with the name 東照大権現, “the Great Gongen, Light of the East”.
- 九谷 = now a part of Kaga, Ishikawa, in the former Kaga Province.
Names
- 狩野探幽 (1602-1674) = a Japanese painter of the Kanō school. One of the foremost Kanō painters, many of the best known Kanō works today are by Tan’yū.
Replies
Read at a glimpse. Kanji would be easier. Kana and grammar might be harder. Practically I can do this in English. I haven’t really tested this style in Japanese, nonetheless.
It’s indeed a different kind of reading than usual sequential reading.
Perhaps Wanikani + External Definition script + fast review, would prepare for this.
