Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

New scheduling poll below: 神さまがまちガえる (Beginner Book Club) // Starting November 05 - #10 by Shadowlauch

Old poll

Scheduling this manga is pretty hard since the chapters are around 35 pages long so a bit too long for the BBC, but splitting them up is a bit too short for one week. I’m going to propose 3 different schedules:

Fast (5 weeks)
Week Start Date Chapter Page Numbers Page Count
Week 1 Nov 05 Chapter 1 3 - 40 38
Week 2 Nov 19 Chapter 2 41 - 76 36
Week 3 Nov 26 Chapter 3 77 - 108 32
Week 4 Dec 03 Chapter 4 109 - 142 34
Week 5 Dec 10 Chapter 5 143 - 174 32
Middle (8 weeks)
Week Start Date Chapter Page Numbers Page Count
Week 1 Nov 05 Chapter 1 3 - 16 14
Week 2 Nov 12 Chapter 1 17 - 40 23
Week 3 Nov 19 Chapter 2 41 - 59 19
Week 4 Nov 26 Chapter 2 60 - 76 17
Week 5 Dec 03 Chapter 3 77 - 108 32
Week 6 Dec 10 Chapter 4 109 - 126 18
Week 7 Dec 17 Chapter 4 127 - 142 16
Week 8 Dec 24 Chapter 5 143 - 174 32
Slow (10 weeks)
Week Start Date Chapter Page Numbers Page Count
Week 1 Nov 05 Chapter 1 3 - 16 14
Week 2 Nov 12 Chapter 1 17 - 40 23
Week 3 Nov 19 Chapter 2 41 - 59 19
Week 4 Nov 26 Chapter 2 60 - 76 17
Week 5 Dec 03 Chapter 3 77 - 90 14
Week 6 Dec 10 Chapter 3 91 - 108 18
Week 7 Dec 17 Chapter 4 109 - 126 18
Week 8 Dec 24 Chapter 4 127 - 142 16
Week 9 Dec 31 Chapter 5 143 - 156 14
Week 10 Jan 07 Chapter 5 157 - 174 18

Having read the manga I have to advocate for the “Middle (8 weeks)” schedule since the “Fast” one really is break neck speed for the BBC and the “Slow” one breaks up at some not so great moments especially in chapter 3 to get the split.

[poll type=regular results=always public=true chartType=bar close=2022-09-31T22:00:00.000Z]
  • Fast (5 weeks)
  • Middle (8 weeks)
  • Slow (10 weeks)
[/ [poll ]

Some of the dates fall onto christmas eve and new years eve. We will hold a vote on if you should take breaks on those once we have settled on a schedule

Is the breaking up chapter 4 in the middle schedule to be more like BBC schedule? Because I feel like 34 pages aren’t that much more than 32, and if 32 can fly…? But maybe it is to help for those that would find 32 pages in a week a bit much?

In any case, I voted for that option because I figured that would be better for most people. And I was somewhere between middle and fast. ^^

Yes usually the page count per week seems to hover around 20-25 for a lot of BBC manga clubs, so for the “middle” schedule I tried to have an average that falls into that range. Originally I wanted to split ch 1 into two then have ch 2 read in one go and so on, but ch 3 does not have a great point to split it up so I ended up with this schedule.

Where’s the none of the above option? I don’t think the 8 weeks option makes much sense. As @MissDagger mentioned, 32 pages is really no different from 34, so splitting the fourth chapter after reading the third all at once doesn’t make sense to me. I’d recommend 6 or 7 weeks. Basically only split the first chapter, or split the first two chapters. I think either of those would be better than the 8 week option.

The reason why it is split up, is to give people time to catch up if 34 pages is too much for them. Because constantly having over 30 pages is not something we usually do, at least not to my knowledge.

It would be interesting to see how people would vote if those options were included though. That said, I’ll just read it faster on my own if needed, and I don’t plan on voting in the poll since it’s obviously not directed at me.

Is that the correct CDJapan link? It looks like it links to a monthly issue of the manga.

This is what is linked:

vs this, which is found found here:

I agree with this, although I’m fine with the 8 week option too

Good catch I fixed the link.

Sorry to everyone that has already voted on the poll, since the poll can’t be changed afterwards I will have to create a new one. Since the slow schedule did not get any backing, the fast schedule was honestly to fast for this club and @seanblue & @MissDagger made some suggestions I have changed the available schedules.

I’d be fine reading it faster, but putting myself in the shoes of the folks who may be just getting started in the beginner’s reading club, I went ahead and voted for the slowest one. Three 30+ page readings in a row seems like it may be kind of daunting for them, even if it’s at the end.

Chapter 5 is so cute and super fast…very little text…that 30 pages might as well be 15-20… when you read it you’ll see what I mean  No one should worry about ch5 at all…it was a great way to wrap up the first vol and I think people will enjoy it as well as read it FAST!

For what it’s worth, I split the 耳をすませば chapters to keep them at 17-20 to avoid them being 36-37 per week, and it seems a lot of people are getting through them quickly.

Of course, I don’t want to disregard any readers who are quietly appreciating the shorter chapter pace, and we won’t have all the same people from one club reading in the next.

And I don’t know how the density or difficulty of dialogue compares between the two manga.

This is of course where the voting comes into play =D

The voting has ended and we will be reading this manga according to the 8 weeks schedule. Since the last week would fall onto christmas eve I feel obliged to create another poll on what to do

What should we do with week 8?
  • Start on Dec 24th and run for 2 weeks
  • Start on Dec 24th and run for 1 week
  • Start on Dec 31st
  • Start on Jan 07th

It’s the final week, no? Just start on December 24th. Don’t need to set an end date. If people want to wait until after Christmas or the New Year to actually read it, that’s up to them.

If there were another week coming after, that might be a different story, but there’s never been an end date on when we can do readings.

I don’t mean it as an end date and more a way to set the start of the next book. Usually we start the next book 2 weeks after the last week started in the previous one. So for “run for 1 week” the next book would start on Jan 7th and for “run for 2 weeks” it would start on Jan 14th

With that result we will be sticking to the usual schedule.

Could someone prepare the vocab sheet? I’m currently only half-functioning with a cold.

If nobody beats me to it, I’ll set one up tonight.

Alright, I have made the sheet. English chapter titles are provisional (仮)until I actually read the book and know that they are correct. :stuck_out_tongue: If somebody who has read it has a better translation, feel free to replace them!
