Technically this challenge starts tomorrow for me, but I’m marking my place as it were since I now know where I’m starting from.
I have 121 pages left in 硝子の塔の殺人, or ~4 hrs since I’m reading along with a (sped up) audiobook. Hoping to wrap it up this weekend if I can.
I have neglected 糞尿譚 and should probably get back to it
I plan to start volume one of 本好き, for which I also have an audiobook cause why not. It’s quite short so I imagine <2 weeks for that.
I don’t know what to read after that. I have so many books. Here are a scattering that I own and would be willing to start after 本好き so if you have feelings (want my review, love the author, whatever) lemme know. Can’t guarantee I’ll pick it, but could sway me!
If I had to choose I’d say 火車, only because I just put it on my to-read list myself!
But all of those sound interesting, so I’ll be looking forward to your impressions whatever you choose.
First update! Read page 60 to page 63 (16 – 17%) of かがみの孤城. This challenge I’ll be keeping my summaries short as I’ll soon be very short on time. Along the way I may also decide to only post either once a week, or when I’ve reached some checkpoint/milestone.
I track my reading in my study log (as well as progress in all other areas of Japanese and academic study), so feel free to drop in!
Today: 5 pages of よつばと! My reading practice is: I read a volume cover to cover without looking anything up, to get a gist and also to monitor how much I’ve progressed. I then go back and work page by page, looking up all unfamiliar vocab and some grammatical constructions. I’m in the first stage with this book, having just finished Vol. 1 of しろくまカフェ a couple of days ago. I’ve definitely gotten a bit better - I can understand some stuff! - and Ayase-san’s chatter about 燃えるゴミand 燃えないゴミ is bringing back memories of a school picnic when I was teaching in Japan, when the students kept running back and forth to ask their teacher which garbage bin to put each piece of trash into. I am finding this book very cute so far.
I’ll be continuing reading No Longer Human, I’ll have to go on a hunt to find what I want to read next, but that’s probably a way aways yet.

Today I finished 夜カフェ - This is the first novel I’ve ever finished in Japanese so I’m really happy!
Although it was still pretty difficult for me to read by the end, I could really feel the difference between my ability when I read the first chapter, and my ability now. I’m looking forward to being able to read more novels in the future now that I’ve (mostly) gotten over being intimidated by large blocks of text!
Alright, I’ve just decided that my goal is to read one manga chapter every day! I’ve recently started One Piece and I’m at volume 17 right now but I own the first 45 volumes, so there’s more than enough content for the next two months, no matter how fast I may go

Phew, this week has been a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get ready for the challenge, but here I am! I’m WK happy too because I just leveled up to 37
Anyway, today’s reading was fairly light. I read 10 pages of ピーチガール volume 1. I’d forgotten how ridiculous this manga was. Like, the main character decides she’s going to confess to her crush when she’s gotten rid of her tan…? It’s also kinda hard to understand the girls sometimes because they use a lot of slang.
As a newbie in the Japanese learning community, my reading material pool is quite limited, and for this challenge I think I’ll stick to satori reader and other short stories.
My goals for the summer are getting into the habit of reading Japanese every day - even if only for a short time, understanding grammar found “in the wild” and learning new words. Reading is one of my passions and I’m looking forward to the day when I’ll be able to do it confidently in Japanese, too
Thanks a lot to the organisers of this reading challenge for the work they put in!
Yesterday I finished this week’s book club readings, so today I picked up SAO. Was reading SAO for a week before the book club started, but for some reason I haven’t managed to read the two books in parallel. Maybe that’ll change next week Depends entirely on how fast I can finish each week’s book club reading because that will have to take priority.
Potato! Nice to see you participate
And to see that my home post template is being stolen borrowed… what an honor
Today was a good start to the challenge!
I read pages 34-56 of Yotsubato vol.3 on the subway, then went over them again in the evening and looked up some new words.
For the near future I’m planning on alternating between Yotsubato vol.3 and FukaBoku vol.2. There’s a big difference in their difficulty for me, so it will be nice to have an option of challenging myself on days when I feel up for it
I fiiiiinally finished chapter 8 in 海辺のカフカ - Kafka on the Shore (Advanced Book Club) . It was honestly such a struggle for me. Here’s hoping the chapters here on out are smooth so I can catch up with the book club!
I think puns should be shellebrated! I reel-y love them
And good call on おやすみプンプン; now that you say it, I do recall hearing something about the dark themes from somewhere… It’s actually good for me to know before reading it too. Thanks for that~
Finished volume 3 of K-On!
Also started reading volume 15 of One Piece, finishing chapters 127-131.
All in all, pretty decent first day of the challenge!
