📚📚 Read every day challenge - Summer 2022 🏖 ☀

This is my second challenge joined! Unlike the last, I’m not going into this with any specific goals aside from just reading at least a little bit in Japanese every day, for the full three months until the next challenge.

I’ve got all volumes of ハイキュー!! though, and I’d like to at least make some headway through that, if not finish it. I also want to sit down one day (at least) when I don’t have anything else I need to be doing and just read and see how many volumes of manga I can read in a single day. I probably don’t have the stamina to spend all day reading novels in Japanese yet (sadly), but I think I can swing manga at least occasionally.

Though I won’t be joining any listening challenge, I do wanna try and get a little listening practice in (although certainly not every day), and I’ll likely be keeping track of that here, too.

i started putting a serious effort into reading about a month ago, when i started my first light novel. it’s been a challenge, the first few days i was slogging through 3 or 4 pages in an hour. and then i had a timeout because i got ill. took it up again about a week ago, and have been making good progress. i’m now some 120 pages in (40 just in the last two days) and enjoying it muchly ^^

i’m reading the LN tie-in to the Bloom into You manga/anime: やがて君になる 佐伯沙弥香について, and i’m on the first of 3 volumes.

edit july 7th: i’m about halfway through the second volume of やが君, and have added 隣の吸血鬼さん as a light alternative.
edit juli 10th: finished volume one of 隣の吸血鬼さん. picked up the Kase-san series again, which i started a year ago. got about 3 volumes to go there.
edit july 19th: turned out i had an extra volume of Kase-san to go, that was fun. still avoiding the LN, started reading アネモネ.
edit august 14: finished アネモネ (3 volumes - so far). continuing with the やが君 light novel. started 少女革命ウテナ.
edit august 24: about 1/5 into やが君 LN 3rd volume.
edit august 31: half-way through that last volume of やが君. also, grabbed マグナムリリィ because the first volume was currently free, read the whole thing in about 3 hours.

i’m using the kindle, with a japanese-english dictionary. this allows me to look up words directly while reading, without having to switch devices or anything. this has probably been the most significant factor in allowing me to read despite my persistent lack of vocabulary. i’ve tried using a japanese-japanese dictionary, but i definitely wasn’t ready for that yet.

it’s a thrill! i’m still getting regular flashes of “i just read that! in japanese!” - after two years and some of learning japanese, it totally blows my mind that i can now read an actual book. that i’m a hundred pages in, no pictures, and i can recount the story.

i don’t have any specific goals for the challenge, just keep reading. the next two volumes are already on my kindle, and i’m sure i’ll find something else for afterwards. (and i do think that i can finish the series before the challenge is over).

and thanks to @DIO-Berryさん for pointing me at the right post! ^^

edit: i also have an account on natively now ^^

I‘m now five years in and I still have that feeling sometimes! So crazy.

That’s no small feat! How do you like reading it, compared to manga?
(I for one am not really into manga, I prefer normal books any time as they are easier to read for me.)

= Japanese
= Japanese and Spanish

Like last time, I’m aiming to read something in both Spanish and Japanese every day! I’ve been neglecting my Spanish reading in favor of practicing my listening, so it’ll be good to finally get back to the book I’m reading.

I’ll be coming into this challenge right out of the listen every day challenge, which I did for most of June. Going forward, my plan is to alternate the two and do the read every day challenge during the main two-month challenge period, and then the listen every day challenge during the off month. As long as I want to work on both languages, I know that I can’t keep up with both challenges at the same time, unfortunately.

As always, I won’t be posting very frequent updates in this thread, though I’ll try to check in at least occasionally. For more detailed posts about my reading, see either my study log or the pro wrestling thread.

What I'm reading in Spanish:

The main thing I’m reading right now is a parallel text book in Spanish and English about local history. It’s really good so far, and I’m really, really enjoying it .

I should be finishing it a week or so in, so I’ll be choosing another book after that, and I’m not entirely sure what exactly I’ll be reading! I own a couple books that I want to read, but they’re both a little hard, for different reasons, and I’m considering checking out another library book to read instead, because I think reading something a little closer to my level will help me improve faster.

I also started watching La Casa de las Flores for the listening challenge, but I’m watching it with Spanish subtitles, so it’s also reading practice . I might end up using that for this challenge as well, because I think there’s an argument for it counting for both.

What I'm reading in Japanese:

Same as last time! I’m primarily going to be translating Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling recaps and post-match comments, and then maybe reading some more of 大海原と大海原 volume 3 if I run out of wrestling translations to do (which doesn’t happen often).

I’m also going to be trying to keep watching TJPW’s new show on youtube, 夢プロレス-dream on the ring-, which is like a very small scale competition show where four women in the entertainment industry are competing for the chance to become a wrestler. The episodes are short and also entirely subtitled in Japanese, so I’ve been using them for listening practice, but my listening is very poor, so it ends up being almost entirely reading practice . I can only follow them with very extensive pausing and looking stuff up.

I have probably done this wrong so will edit later!

I think I should be able to read most days. I have a week where Internet will probably limited so will have to see how I go without being able to look up words!

There are dictionaries that don’t require internet connection, e.g. for iOS there is one called “Japanese” (red icon). I don’t know whether it’s available for Android, but I guess there should be similar ones for Android as well.

manga comes easily to me, but then, i have been reading comics since i was a kid, as well as novels. with both manga and now this light novel, the struggle with reading japanese overlays the usual experience of hallucinating vividly while staring at marks scribbled on paper.

with manga, the flow was often interrupted by having to look up words on the laptop. though with both series i’ve read, it became easier as i absorbed more of the vocabulary. with やがて君になる that was particularly bad due to the poor image quality. though it has furigana, they were often very difficult to make out, and even the more complex kanji were blurry (apparently same on the paper version). the Kase-san series was easier, even though it doesn’t have furigana, but the image quality was just so much better (and it has easier text/grammar). i enjoyed reading them both, and by the end of やが君 i was reading 2 or 3 chapters in a sitting. but i was never able to get deep into the flow.

the book is technically much more difficult. the style of writing is of course very different, there’s no longer just dialogue (and internal monologue), but much more description and action. so that’s been a learning curve. i’ve also been playing catch-up with my grammar, and i freely admit to fudging that. in particular the introduction was difficult, with descriptions of the protagonists home, family situation, etc., in relatively dense text. on the other hand, the flow is much better. on the kindle i can tap any word, and get a dictionary definition. in particular since i figured out that i had a japanese-english dictionary included (and i installed another), i can stay focused on the kindle, and i get much deeper flow.

though it definitely helps that i’ve got plenty of images from the manga and anime to fill in the background, even if we haven’t been introduced to any of the other characters from those yet ^^

Starting from this one, I'll be doing weekly mini challenges instead of an ongoing, two-month challenge. The goal is to read the exact same but to approach it differently, just to make things a bit fresher for me.

I haven’t decided what I’ll be reading/playing this challenge but I’m sure I’ll come up with something very soon, I already have several ideas. I still have a bit of Final Fantasy 7 left so will finish that first.

Happy to participate with you all again c:

For Android, which I use nowadays (mobile, tablet), I might recommend Aedict; but as I send to AnkiDroid as well, I’d rather use Akebi. I used to use Takoboto in the past.

It was a while since I use iOS, but I used to used Japanese with the red icon – there was one for Android too, but it looked bad compared to iOS counterpart. I never really used AnkiMobile, so I can’t tell about Anki integration.

In any case, there are many mobile apps available, if you are looking for simply JE. The only option I know / is using, offline JJ is Yomichan on PC / laptop. [1]

I also use Kotobank app for Android, but it needs to be online.

I also tried reading on mobile Android by switching apps between Bookwalker and Akebi, so it is indeed doable.

  1. Setting up JJ legally is, I don’t know how… ↩︎

Summer challenge! :tada: I’m actually working on (of all things) not obsessing over reading Japanese every single day right now. But I still want to have a daily habit, where unless something is somewhat sideways then I do read every day.

I will be reading Orange with the Orange book club! I’m excited about that, and also excited about turning my reading attention towards my “backlist” so to speak. Finishing books and series that I already started, working my way through the books I have in order from easiest to hardest, etc.

And as in the last challenge, I’d like to try to balance my reading somewhat. In English, I’m currently reading Woman Running in the Mountains (translation of 山を走る女), Sal and Gabi Break the Universe, and The Subplot: What China is Reading and Why it Matters. In Spanish, El Principito. In Dutch, nothing yet, but I want to work on that.

Summer reading quest … スタート!

Ah, the reading challenge has come full circle, both in general and for me! :birthday: I started late the first time around, and each successive one has had its ups and downs. Since it’s an anniversary challenge for me, I have decided to take things back to basics and make this season’s a tiny reading challenge (inspired by @Redglare). July, in particular, is looking to be busy for me, and I want to simply get back in the habit of reading and participating in the community: no grand designs to finish a certain number of books, no crazy scheduling to play catch-up on all of the novels I’ve put on hold. Just. Read. If I can get in a page or short article for the day, then I’m all good. If I end up doing more, then those are like extra scoops of ice cream: a welcome treat. :icecream:

Yay, it’s that time again! These challenges have been so fun and so rewarding, I’m excited to read with you all again

Background

I’m not really sure what my goal is this challenge; I’ve somehow ended up with a lot of ongoing/about to start projects :joy: Unless I magically finish in the next few days (impossible) I’ll still be playing バディミッションBOND, plus 海辺(うみべ)のカフカ for the book club, and then the VN club will be starting up soon, and I’m trying to do the listening challenge concurrently as well  We’re out here!

I’ll almost certainly keep playing VNs and the like; I think my next one will probably be Stein’s Gate? I’m in chaos mode constantly so who really knows, but I’ve been meaning to watch the anime forever so VN instead! I think I’d also like to work on my manga pile I have lmao, I have so many that I just have not touched at all so working through that’d be good. Plus they’re definitely faster to finish than any of the other nonsense I’m up to, and we love a sense of progress :tada: More than anything I just want to keep having fun reading stuff in Japanese, I’m excited to see how it all goes!

I’d like to join in again, but this time I won’t use a calendar for my reading. I started “read something in Japanese every day” as a personal challenge in February 2021 and after a year and a half the habit is firmly established even if I miss a day sometimes.

Aside from continuing to read, my big goal is to finish all the lessons in the So-Matome N1 grammar book by the end of July. It’s hard to make myself do it, but whenever I do push through and study, I see immediate payoffs in my reading comprehension. I’m currently somewhere in the “intermediate plateau” where it’s hard to see perceptible differences, so seeing the instant impact of a few grammar lessons is really rewarding and motivating. There isn’t much left in the book, I just gotta get it done.

Currently reading

暁のヨナ vol. 14 (manga)
怪盗紳士 アルセーヌ・ルパン (Lupin stories)
岩元先輩ノ推薦 vol 2 (manga)
本好き vol 2 (Junior version)

On the shelf

暁のヨナ manga (up to vol 29 lol)
SPY x FAMILY manga (vol 2 and 3)
彩雲国物語 light novel (up to vol 14)
plus assorted other, but this is what I’m most interested in now

I’ve really wanted to read the Saiunkoku Monogatari books for a long time, because the light novels continue on after the anime series ended. But every time I tried reading a sample, the difficulty level (kanji, grammar) was above my “nope” threshold. I think I’ve finally reached the point where I have enough of a grasp of general Japanese to try this. There’s still clearly a lot in these books that I don’t know, but I feel like what’s left is story-specific enough that using other material as graded reading won’t help, and it’s time to just dive in. I already know the parts of the story covered in these first two volumes so no matter how hard it is I won’t be totally lost. But I bet I’ll want to take a break after volume 1.

Finished

東京タラレバ娘 (manga) vol 1, 2

I’ve been reading very little over the past month 'cause I’ve been trying to focus more on listening so it’ll be nice to get back into things :durtle_noice: At least a little - not gonna do the calendar thing since I have exams coming up and knowing me that wouldn’t work out that well anyway :caught_durtling:
