  • I’m reading ahead (I’ve read beyond the end of this week’s section)

Vocab Sheet

Anybody should feel free to add to the vocab sheet. Read the guidelines on the first sheet- even if a word is not yet included you can use the spreadsheet as a tool to get help.

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading need to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as such.

Discussion Questions

Feel free to use these questions as a framework or a starting point for responses. I also encourage people to post their own discussion questions!

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!
  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?
  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

Okay, finally we got some description of the experiment. My only thought was… everyone is born / inseminated at the same time? What a waste of efficiency. It’s like building a factory and using it only for a week a year…
Though it’s still enjoyable to read, I’m starting to get a bit bored that nothing really happens, just some セックス with 恋人s

I don’t know, it fits with the general ethos of all kids being everyone’s child, and all parents being everyone’s parents. Handy way of dividing them into age groups as well, lol. You don’t get that awkward cut-off point that leads to some kids getting fewer opportunities.

Same. As much as I enjoy reading about their super romantic foreplay (:upside_down_face:), I would like to see something actually happening!

In this sentence by the way, does anybody know how the grammar of それをするとしないのとでは works? It seems like a してもしなくても sort of thing, but the sudden の is throwing me off.

「それをするとしないのとでは、何か違うものですか? 昔の交尾の名残でしょう?」

That’s an interesting school system I somehow had never heard anything about. I think most countries (Japan included) have kids start school at a set date after they’ve reached a certain age. So while the kids may be months apart in age, they don’t miss out on months worth of information. In Germany if you’re an in between child, you can start school a year earlier if you/the parents want, so you turn 6 early in the school year instead of starting at 6.

So while I think this extreme effect is probably not something 村田 considered, having the births be close together removes the bias of ‘this might be my actually child as compared to this kid born in a different month’ and possibly differences in maturity levels.

And yeah, what nice foreplay. I guess it makes sense to go for what you know. Also whatever works, not judging here. :+1:

Wine on the roof was probably my favorite scene so far, just seemed the most real I guess…
