Vocab Sheet

Anybody should feel free to add to the vocab sheet. Read the guidelines on the first sheet- even if a word is not yet included you can use the spreadsheet as a tool to get help.

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading need to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as such.

Discussion Questions

Feel free to use these questions as a framework or a starting point for responses. I also encourage people to post their own discussion questions!

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!
  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?
  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

Aaand I caught up! :tada: Until tomorrow, at least.

I wonder if the neighbor will shop up again…

:flushed: That was fast!

I just realised I forgot to post the questions I had while reading!

というのもあり

会社が狭く、デスクでの弁当禁止というのもあり、隣の部署の女性社員と一緒に一番大きな会議室で輪になって食事をするのが慣例になっている。

I can see what というのもあり probably means, but I couldn’t really find a reference for it. Is it a fixed sort of grammar point, or just an amalgamation of a few other ones?

The chat with the colleagues

「朝礼なんかやってる暇あったら、そっちをしっかりして欲しいですね」

I can’t make sense of this within the context. This colleague runs off to call home because of her feverish child, and then someone says the above. Is it supposed to be a bitchy sort of comment? “If she has enough time to come to the morning meeting, then she must have enough time to do her job well.” or am I missing something?

〜ないなら〜ないで....?

なんか、産まないなら産まないで、手持ち無沙汰じゃない?

What does 産まないなら産まないで mean? Is this a grammar point? I couldn’t find a reference for it.

I imagine the continued mentions of the Chiba experiment must be a Chekhov’s gun, surely?

an attempt at questions 2 and 3

That section talks about how their company’s support system for working parents is lacking. If they (the company) have the time for a meeting every morning, they’d rather that time went into creating better employee benefits.

There’s this one for 〜なら〜で (link to a nihongosensei article). It’s using a negative verb in this case, but works about the same, I think. Unless someone finds something about the negative meaning something else. In this case it’s a 判断 that comes after.

「その状況になるなら何らかの行動をするべきだ」という話者の判断を表す文型です。
後件にはアドバイス、命令、何らかの判断が来ます。不満が現れることが多いです。
一般的にはその行動をしたほうがよく、その責任があるような場面で用います。

Ahh, both of those answers make perfect sense!

I noticed that a little later on they use しっかりする in the same way: 旦那さんの会社がしっかりしてるといいよね.

Here’s some more info on というのもあって: ~ていうのもあってって英語でなんて言うの? - DMM英会話なんてuKnow?

I’d say it’s a common amalgamation (of particles/verbs?) / a common phrase, but I wouldn’t call it a grammar point in and of itself.
It’s basically stating several reasons for something. 会社が狭い, and there’s also the fact that デスクでの弁当禁止, and that’s why […].

Super interesting questions and answers this week, much appreciated. Helpful. I thought the eating at your desk rule was fun/funny
