📚📚 Read every day challenge - Fall/Autumn 2021 🍁🍂🦝

Welcome to the “Read Japanese Every Single Day” Challenge, Fall/Autumn Edition! :maple_leaf: :fallen_leaf:

This summer, @Redglare had the amazing idea of doing a “Read Every Day” challenge, where we challenged ourselves to read something in Japanese every day for 2 whole months - we had so much fun with this challenge that we decided to do it again  If you missed the summer challenge, feel free to jump in on this one - we would love to have more people join in on the fun!

Personal testimony - this challenge is awesome! My biggest issue, with everything, has always been doing it consistently. But somehow, this challenge actually got me reading every single day for 2 whole months (plus a little extra - I chose to extend my challenge because I wasn’t quite ready to stop ). Magic! :sparkles: If you want to read more but chronically procrastinate on actually doing it, this might just be the challenge for you.

Whether you are an expert reader already or a new reader just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge! To quote @Redglare:

This is a thread for people who:

:bookmark: want to spend time reading a bunch this fall/autumn
:bookmark: want to improve their reading speed and comprehension
:bookmark: want to hold themselves accountable and have a place to document their progress
:bookmark: simply want to join in on the challenge of reading every day for two or so months :books: :books:

Time frame: September 1 - October 31

This is the “official” recommended time frame, but late starters are absolutely welcome! This thread will be up and running until the end of December, so you can start and finish your personal challenge at any point during that time, and shorten or lengthen the challenge to the time period that works best for you. Yes, we know that this time frame does not completely align with the astronomical season of fall/autumn, and may not represent “autumn time” for everyone - we had this discussion in the summer challenge thread and the general consensus was - it’s fine :stuck_out_tongue:

Your reading materials can be whatever you want, be it manga, light novels, books, visual novels, magazines, graded readers, satori reader, or Japanese games, you name it, anything goes as long as it is something in Japanese :jp: :durtle_the_explorer:

Threads worth checking out

I recommend checking out The News Reading Challenge thread if you’d like to read news articles every day, but you are of course welcome to post about it in this thread too if you’d like to.
The "news reading" challenge 🗞

If you don’t know where to find reading material I recommend checking out the Immersion/Reading section of the following thread:
The Ultimate Additional Japanese Resources List!

There’s also quite a few book clubs here on the forum, some of them have vocab lists which can make for an easier reading experience. A list of book clubs can be found here:

If we’re going to do this year around, then isn’t that just the tadoku thread with extra steps?

Well, yes but no - to me, it’s sort of a different approach to the same goal (reading more), with the focus being on “reading every day” (no matter how much) versus “reading a lot/reading x number of things/pages.” Habit focused vs. output/result focused. It’s subtle but it does make a difference for me personally. I don’t do well with things like yearly goals - yearly goals may as well not exist for me, the time horizon’s too long. The short, discrete nature of these challenges makes it feel more approachable and makes me more likely to stick to it for that time period - it’s more of a sprint than a marathon. It’s (somehow) easier for me to string a bunch of small challenges together than it is to stick with one big long thing for the whole year. I also don’t feel like I really belong in the tadoku thread because I’m not a particularly fast or proficient reader. It’s more difficult to see/feel progress when you’re a slow reader if you’re measuring in “volumes completed” versus “days read.”

So basically the difference is mind tricks, but they seem to be working for me so far :woman_shrugging:

Fair enough on the mind tricks. But just so everyone is aware, I think a vast majority of people in tadoku arent fast readers or anything and it’s more just about getting some reading done and all are welcome. I can see how having a smaller number for total books/volumes completed can make it feel like you’re not making as much progress doe.

I really prefer the framing of “read every day”, some days I will literally only read a single hard panel or a few easy ones and call that success. If I’m counting only in terms of volumes then that doesn’t amount to much and so doesn’t feel like progress. But counting it in terms of days I get “~60 days of reading Japanese everyday” which feels like a huge success.

I’m also unsure on the naming of the Tadoku thread, I tend to read intensively rather than extensively, but I’m not sure if that actually matters.

I nominally participate occasionally in the Tadoku thread, but I particularly like the social nature of these read every day challenges, I enjoy seeing everyone’s frequent status update posts and the discussions that emerge from them - I find it all very inspiring.

It’s good to know about the Tadoku thread, for in-between or after these challenges  Thanks for letting us know!

I agree about the mind trick, and that this thread has a special feeling. Reading everyday, no matter how much for what seems more of building a habit and posting for accountability/comradery. Having a number goal is always dicey for me personally (since if I don’t feel like I’m making “progress” enough, I quickly loose confidence and motivation :sweat_drops:). But! Maybe if I make a good enough habit, I’ll eventually feel more confident to join other threads?! That’s my hope at least.

Your calendar is brilliant; could I ask you to copy that into the wiki’d second post, (with @windupbird ’s approval), maybe in a dropdown, so others may use it, please?

You can directly “steal” it from the post itself: If you reply to the post that contains it and click on the speech bubble labeled “Quote whole post” at the very left of the edit box menu, it will copy the raw text of the whole post including the calendar. See:

I used to read every day, but reading’s not really part of my daily study routine now. So I’ll try and pick up the habit again (:
At the moment I’m only reading Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Yay a new thread! ^^ Hopefully I will be able to read more this time around.

My goal is to read 君の名は next year, so this year I want to focus on just reading more and continuing to build up more vocabulary/grammar knowledge. For this reason, I will be mostly using Satori Reader to for reading in stead of manga for now!

01/09/2021
I read Sakura and Suzuki Episode 1 and Dialogs: Airport (Asking for Directions to the Check-In Counter) on Satori Reader

Interesting new words:

遊びに行く = to go on a trip; to go out to play; to go and visit (a friend)
忙しい = busy

I joined the last challenge very late (because of JLPT preparations) and then decided to break the rules again by combining the streak from the two challenges to make the goal 100 days total.
I’m trying not to start anything new now and concentrate on finishing things.

Why I'm Reading

In the “short term” I want to pass the JLPT 2 next summer! For long term, I’ll be moving to the UK for a few years and I want to not only retain the Japanese I’ve learned so far, but continue to cultivate it so I’ll be better then ever when returning to Japan :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Challenge Tips
  • Write down character names on a bookmark/post-it at the front of the book.
  • Keep track of words on my digital dictionary
  • Physically write down words that appear frequently, and try to memorize them
  • Reading everyone’s progress and posting here is the most fun part :two_hearts:

Ok I’m in. Just started reading それいけズッコケ三人組 which seems pretty achievable so far, both in terms of grammar (N4/N3) and thankfully short chapters, so I’m trying to read one per day.

New season reading thread! Thanks for hosting @windupbird

The articles I read are left to the mercy of おまかせ表示 on wikipedia, or whatever the daily story is on hukumusume - really useful website! - or I just read an article on something that’s sprung to mind… or whatever cute manga has been suggested… honestly it’s all over the place.

Update : I started school on Sept 13th and work on Sept 27th and at some point I put WK on vacation mode because I was too busy and I was studying Japanese both at school and at work anyway. ^^ I completely failed the challenge but hopefully I’ll get used to my new routine soon and complete the next challenge!!
