第8章: 天吾:知らないところに行って 知らない誰かに会う
Title translation: Going to an unknown location, meeting an unknown person

Our character's journey so far. 天吾

Tengo has been gotten provisional permission to rewrite Fukaeri’s book, and he excitedly starts the work. He does still have to meet with some person, that he has to meet at some station.

Now, poll time:

  • I’m reading along
  • I’m still reading this book, but I haven’t reached this part yet
  • I’ve finished this part
  • I’m no longer reading the book

This chapter felt very tiring to read. I might have also just been tired, but especially 天吾’s retelling of his dad’s story was hard to read, and I had to take several breaks.

The train scene with ふかえり was kind of cute and unexpected. ^^ I’m really curious to find out more about her living situation next next chapter!

I read this chapter a few days ago.

Some thoughts

I found the insights into Tengo’s life as a child quite interesting, but Tengo’s father’s backstory was a bit of a drag for me as well… Luckily the chapter got rounded off by the train ride with a surprisingly talkative and cute Fukaeri

Interesting phrases and words:
How bad was Tengo’s life as a child? So bad: このまま倒れて死んでしまえたらどんなにいいだろうとよく思った。

(An insider for Belerith: 滋養 gave me some decent Erin vibes here )

口をきく puzzled me a bit when I tried to read it literally, but turns out it simply means “to speak”.

沈黙をまもる is a beautiful expression, I think.

When Fukaeri talked about her reading skills: よんでいるふりをする。

When Tengo reflects about that he should finally talk to Komatsu and refuse to do the job: それがまっとうな神経を持ち合わせた人間のやることだ。I liked the expression about the straight nerves

That is a good sentence you picked out for this chapter. I identified with that so much.
