Would anyone be interested in a book club for really long books?

ペンギンハイウェー has been suggested in the past, and I think it’s been turned down because of its length. It’s 365 pages (with images), so not quite so long as your suggestions, but perhaps?

So far, though, reading Haruhi has… not been fun. Not because of the subject matter, that is, but because it takes me about half an hour per page (and also the fact that I can’t seem to read aloud fluently to save my life).

I’m still annoyed that I bought the Tsubasa Bunko version of Penguin Highway.

It’ll be easier to discuss options after the next book club votes. If one (or more) of the books I already own wins (i.e. 霧の向こうの不思議な町 or 魔法少女育成計画), then it makes sense for me to read those with the regular book clubs first.

First of all, thanks for all the comments and suggestions

Since at least a few people seem to be interested, I’m thinking I’ll make a poll sometime later(not today, at least) with the books everyone have suggested until then to see how many people would be interested in reading each book, and then I’ll maybe make a separate poll a while after that about the pace. That sound ok? Though, since most people interested in 獣の奏者 seem to feel like they’re not quite ready for reading it yet, maybe I’ll leave that out of the poll for now, so they have a better chance to prepare?

I mostly just wanted to read something longer than the normal book club books, so I’m fine with going at a slower pace too if that’s what people want, too(I figure the advanced book club someone proposed a while ago will have a much faster pace anyway if that takes off and then be able to fulfil that for those of us who also want something faster paced, so it doesn’t make much sense to potentially have two really similar book clubs, which is why this is about reading books that are too long for the current bookclubs, but not necessarily at lightspeed, though we can do that too if that’s what people want)

That sounds like an interesting idea. While there may be some things that would need to be figured out for that to work, I’d join if someone else did the figuring out and set it up

I am really keen on reading something from this author, so I would also be interested in a 獣の奏者 group. I have another book I’ll be finishing soon that I’m reading at around 35 pages a week.

First of all, scroll down if you want a poll

Anyway, about the poll, I just want to say that I chose to not include a few of the suggestions(mostly mine though. I mostly just want to read a book that’s too long for the normal book clubs, which one is not as important to me).

I didn’t include the SAO spin-offs, because we already have the miscellaneous discussion thread and I mostly just initially mentioned them because I couldn’t think of enough examples of books that were too long for the book clubs even if I knew they existed. Anyone who wants to read SAO and discuss or try to ask questions is very welcome over in that topic though

Second, I didn’t include 獣の奏者 because at least a few people who are interested in it seem to want to wait a while before they read it, so I figure it may make more sense to either make a reading group for it later, or to create a miscellaneous discussion thread so some people can read it now and some later.

Anyway, here is the poll:

Do you want to read any of the following books in a group?

  • ペンギン・ハイウェイ
  • 風が強く吹いている
  • オーバーロード

0 voters

I know that’s not a lot to choose from, but that’s mostly because there weren’t a lot of suggestions. I figure we’ll see if there’s enough interest to read one of them from the votes in the poll. It’s 2 books that were suggested in this thread + 1 I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere, all of which would be too long for the currently existing book clubs.

I’ll make separate polls about pace and when to start later if there is enough interest

Also, here are links to the bookwalker pages for all of them since bookwalker has sample pages:

ペンギン・ハイウェイ
風が強く吹いている
オーバーロード

The difficulty varies quite a bit, so that may be worth considering when voting(though I’ll imagine we’ll also adapt the pace to the difficulty of the chosen book to some extent)

Also, I know very little about all three books, so if anyone thinks reading one of them is a particularly good or bad idea, feel free to say so(and if I messed something up, please do say that too  )

I don’t know anything about ペンギン・ハイウェイ but I’ll check it out. May update my vote later if it seems interesting.

I’ve already read ペンギン・ハイウェイ, so I didn’t vote for it above (although I’d like to reread it in the future when I’m at a higher level), but I really enjoyed it, so I’d definitely recommend the book to anyone considering picking it up.

I was the one who originally posted the thread about 風が強く吹いている – life got in the way of me starting it at first; I recently finally began reading it, but I think the number of kanji per page I don’t know yet is too high at the moment for such a long read to be really worthwhile for me. I might switch to something else for the time being and pick it back up later when I’ve reached a higher level on WaniKani. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one interested, though, especially as I thought the anime adaptation was quite strong.

I’m going a bit crazy with reading lately so I think (if I haven’t miscalculated hard the amount of free time I’m going to have the rest of the year) I would like to try joining if you read 風が強く吹いている or オーバーロード, even if I can’t keep up with the pace. If the speed improvement is anything like I’ve had with previous books maybe I can catch up eventually since they are long. Or maybe not if the pace is super fast, but still.
I guess I won’t vote since there is no guarantee I can really make it, but I thought I’d at least say I’m interested.

I’m not going to make any group right now since it seems like not a lot of people were interested judging by the poll(well, unless a ton of people suddenly express interest now or something), but I’ll try to make one again sometime later this year instead and see if more people are interested then so maybe you’ll be able to keep up more easily by then and can join when I do that

I was actually thinking about buying a couple volumes of 私の百合はお仕事です. I read the first chapter from a sample and it was pretty funny.

It is, although past the first chapters it’s more drama/plot-driven than comedy driven. I suppose it’s different than Blend S/Gochuumon/insert other cafe manga in that regard

Just giving the heads up so you don’t get baited

How much have you read? Is it pretty good overall?

I’m maybe half way through volume three.

I appreciate that it can manage to keep a plot running at all times, since most yuri novels can’t seem to keep an issue going for more then three chapters.

Also the fact that romances aren’t resolved in one arc is good because it means the author intends for the series to have some staying power. It also means the cast isn’t immediately segregated into weird pairings that don’t interact with each other right off the bat.

In light of the fact that the author uses competent story telling strategies, I give this series an 11/10

The series is on sale on Kindle and I bought all of them because I have a problem, it’s PROBABLY going to be too complex but it sounds fun.

Oohh I think my partner is watching the anime for that at the moment. So I’m voting on that just so I can talk to him.
