Windgreen's Winding Road to WaniKani Level 60 (Over 6 Years!) & Whimsical Wisdom for Japanese (and Beyond!) šŸƒ 怰 šŸ›¤ :crabigator: :durtle_noice: 😌 šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ

Somehow, this gif suits you so well love2

Congratulations! I really appreciate these development/self-learning related insight, the 70% rule is a good reminder, I learned a few very helpful things within this post

Congratulations! Lot of awesome people hitting 60s recently, definitely an inspiration for those of us a third of the way in.

I only read the Manga! Never watched the anime but it was so good. i love Fuu too but Hikaru was definitely my favorite. I cried so hard reading the series its so so good. I bought the artbook for it in Japan a while back, I’ll try and take a picture of it when I get home. It was my first manga that I read so it means a lot to me.

Congratulations

It’s an amazing accomplishment and achievement that you reached

Your post delivers a very important message and remind us that we’re all humans (not machines) who are trying to do our best to achieve some goals we’re dreaming about. We should remind ourselves to treat ourselves as humans too

There are so many takeaways from your post. You gave me hope and inspiration to continue on this journey, even if it takes longer than expected. The point where I convinced myself that wanikani is what’s gonna teach me all of the Japanese language, you just summarized it in a better way on how it’s a key to open the different doors to our desired distances and not the distance itself.

I see that you also enjoyed atomic habits :face_with_hand_over_mouth: it’s a fascinating book that changed my life a couple of years back forever. It helped me build habits and build streaks too. It opened my eyes on so many things and I’m forever grateful to it.

Congratulations again and may you have all the wisdom and guidance you may need on your journey :folded_hands:

Congrats on hitting level 60 and hope the ongoing study continues to bring successful achievements.

I can say the same about you! We’ve seen each other here and there during this ā€œnice durtling timeā€ (I love how you wrote this!)… :durtle: Weren’t you also in the Harry Potter bookclub? :high_voltage: :green_book: After lots of starts and stops, a while ago I finally got to chapter 6! :turtle:

That cake is amazing and totally appropriate! Because…

Although I haven’t played it in a while, I also went through that phase! :joy: Such a lovely game! :green_heart:

Hikaru is a ball of sunlight! :sun:

That’s so cool! :star_struck: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: I remember being a teen and fangirling with my friends over the artbook: we’d search online and find a few pictures of it, and because it was the dial-up internet, each picture would load slowly, one pixel line at a time… :snail:

Well said, I couldn’t agree more!

Absolutely! Even if takes longer, may it be an interesting and enjoyable journey! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Amazing post, congrats on your journey! I learned a lot reading it.

A delightful post from a delightful person. Great LOTR references, music and advice :ok_hand:

I hope you have fun on your Japan trip next year.

A reference to Rachel Carson would be apt.\

Congratulations! What an incredible celebratory post!

I’m someone of a similar age, with a similar journey of starts and stops over the (gasp!) decades, also finding WaniKani around the same time.

One thing I don’t think you could have possibly expected is that your post has resulted in inspiring this rare and extremely casual lurker to finally post in the community. Right here and right now.

It seems as though half the community threads I read (as a rare and extremely casual lurker) are from someone speedrunning WaniKani. Those posts put me into a ā€œGapā€ mindset, because I’ve made such relatively little progress over the years. Not healthy.

In contrast, the similarities between your and my respective journies gives me encouragement, and puts me into a ā€œGainā€ mindset, which helps me to focus on the positive progress I have made. Super healthy!

What is this ā€œGapā€ and ā€œGainā€ language? Well, given your numerous citations, I hereby recommend to you ā€œThe Gap and the Gainā€ by Dan Sullivan. It might be right up your alley. Admittedly, I found the book extremely repetitive, and a cliffnotes understanding may suffice. Here is one of 77 highlights I made in the book:

In other words, I’ve learned to stop comparing myself against some future ideal, and instead focus on how far I’ve come. This mindset has been transformative in all aspects of my life. And more relevent to this thread, makes me feel real good about my progess.

Instead of thinking how I should have reached level x years ago, I’m excited that since my last reset at the tail end of December 2025, I’ve already reached level 8, and the connections I’m making with each lesson is bringing so much of the language together for me.

So, yeah. I couldn’t help but post a reply after reading your post. Thanks so much for recapping your journey! And best of luck with your continued learning and enjoyment of the language!
