I am in Level 5 of Wanikani, and I just learned the word 三角 (さんかく) , triangle. I have a rough understanding of how rendaku works, and to me it seems like this should be “Sangaku” and not “Sankaku” based on those rules. Is there a reason that this one doesn’t or is it basically arbitrary in this case? The best explanation I can come up with is that it’s essentially two words pressed together rather than one new word.

It does follow the rendaku rules, one of which is “words in on’yomi don’t rendaku”.
