In words that learners might be expected to study, it’s basically only used as “great” in the “great grandparent” sense.
Yeah, I was noticing that, though mostly in a different form, as 曾 - which isn’t taught at all, but considering that’s not a joyo kanji, it’s not too surprising.
That said, 曽 does appear in more than a few place names. Like 木曽谷, which I’d’ve thought is a popular destination. I mean, I’ve been there…
Well, presumably people would write it in the 曽 form. It’s fine to use it for that. But the 旧字体 does still get preference in some places it seems.
