I just finished level 2 and started level 3 and I wanted to know what features I lose access to once I reach level 4. I enjoy using Wanikani, but I’m not in a position to spend money on a monthly subscription to learn Japanese.
Should I consider using Anki instead when I complete level 3? I heard that it’s good, but there’s an overwhelming library of add-ons to use.
The big thing is you won’t get lessons for (and can’t do reviews for) level for kanji, radicals, and vocab at level 4 unless you pay.
Anki is in fact free. There are nice book clubs (and visual novel, and anime, etc clubs) here, so the forums might still be worth using. The forums here are free.
I use Anki, but I know nothing about the add-ons. Possibly because I’ve been using it on iOS. Regardless, I kindly suggest that you keep it simple at least at first. Download a reliable free deck from Anki website and use it until you get the hang of the app.
I had dowloaded and used textfugu’s decks on Anki. And I’ve been using their settings suggestions. I experimented a little with the settings and found out that textfugu’s suggestions work the best for me. To my knowledge WaniKani is based on the same principle and default SRS settings Anki uses. Not the other way around.
I also make my own cards using the example sentences and audio where available from JapanesePod101 and WaniKani, but I find it too much work to be honest. Maybe I am lazy.
Can you access this link? TextFugu | Anki If not, am I allowed to share a PDF of it? Admins? Moderators? Am I allowed?
