What does the "Recent Lessons" number actually represent?

I currently have “37 Recent Lessons” displaying on my dashboard and I’m curious where that number comes from. I’ve been doing 10 lessons every day (with no missed days) for the last 20+ days, so it seems like my “Recent Lessons” should be a multiple of 10, or at least a multiple of 5 since I always do lessons in batches of 5. I’m confused how it’s arriving at 37. It’d be great if someone could share some insights.

Mine has always been equal to my apprentice items that have never been guru’d, but I don’t pay close attention to it and don’t think I’ve ever used the self-study of recent lessons.

I believe it displays the number of items for which you have done the lessons, but that you have never guru’d at any point. If you fail a review of a guru+ item and that item drops down to apprentice again, it doesn’t add to the number on the recent lessons button.
