Aiming to get to WK level 50 next year sometime. If you are a Bunpro user and around level 50 on WaniKani (or anyone over level 20 really), I’m curious to see how much of your Bunpro Vocab decks are “complete” without any active study using Bunpro for the vocab.
I’m currently WK level 17 and having not yet studied vocab on Bunpro. My decks look like below. I know WK won’t catch all the JLPT vocab just wondering, once you get to a higher level if some of the JLPT vocab decks might be closer to completion?
I think the reason it’s surprisingly low is because Bunpro teaches way more kana-only words and phrases than WK do and more common words too, so it’s to be expected that the decks in general aren’t near close to completed just by syncing with WK. At the same time, I don’t think it synced up properly because I can still spot several words in for example the N1 deck that are on lower WK levels but were not marked as mastered in the deck
Yeah I don’t think yours has synched up correctly. The user above is level 30 and has completed more of the vocab decks than you at level 60. Doesn’t seem right…
I know WK misses a lot of the kana based vocab. Just curious as to how much crossover there actually is.
If anything this is a good reason to engage with the bunpro vocab decks at some point, probably closer to finishing WK (I went for the lifetime payment option so I’m in no hurry).
Mine is below, but the syncing doesn’t really work properly. I looked at the first 5 lessons for N5, and there are 12 Kanji words not marked as mastered in my N5 deck. However:
These 6 are learned in WK: 何、椅子、帽子、人、風邪. 青
These 3 are in WK but BP teaches them with the honorific お added: お皿、お風呂、お弁当 . BTW, BP teaches 風呂 and お風呂 as two separate vocab items which odd. Same for 弁当 and お弁当.
BP considers 薬を飲む to be one vocab item, but it’s a noun and a verb, and WK teaches both.
So, for the first 5 lessons for N5 in BP, even though BP shows there are 12 Kanji words not learned if you are at WK level 50, there are actually only two: 鞄 and 鶏肉. I see something similar when quickly browsing lesson 1 of my N1 deck, e.g. お世辞、稼ぐ、側、認める、皇帝、敵 are all learned in WK by level 50, but BP doesn’t sync them as mastered.
It’s safe to say that you will know substantially more N5-N1 vocab in WK at level 50 that what BP might lead you to think by just looking at your BP vocab deck completion rate.
Yeah my plan is to focus on WK for now and bunpro for grammar. Then do the vocab once I’m around level 50 - because I will have a covered most of the grammar by then too.
Yes, the sync is very bad. You need to press it multiple times, comeback at a later day and press it again. Rinse and repeat until the numbers stop changing. I used to use Bunpros vocab study, but I wiped my progress months ago and re-synced (don’t activly use vocab currently, so this is truly raw WK progress).
I also want to point out (as someone who has used vocab study in Bunpro before): Bunpro will not accept/sync if it is not exactly the same. If e.g. WK uses a kanji and Bunpro does not (happens with the rare(er) kanji like 之 (これ)), Bunpro will not accept it. The same goes for weekdays. I think WK uses their full names (e.g. 水曜日), while Bunpro has 水曜 in their decks. So no sync for that.
