What am i doing wrong? Too many Guru and few Master

I am currently at level 9 and I have what appears to be a terrible guru to master ratio (the apprentice are quite low now as i’m trying to focus on improving the gurus).

I notice that i sometimes get error because of typos and similar stupid things (which is fair, still “focus” requried). But also it doesn’t help that i’m mostly doing wanikani on mobile (flaming turtles).

All aside, is this ratio terribly wrong? How to improve accuracy? Or in general what am I missing? It seems like most of users have an incremental ratio apprentice-to-burned.

Thanks a lot!

How fast are you going? Have you been doing lessons at a steady interval or by bursts?

That Master-to-Guru ratio is a bit strange given that Guru 1 + 2 is 3 weeks while Master is 1month, but if you didn’t do any lessons for a while then ramped up over the past month it could be normal.

Overall I wouldn’t worry too much about this, let the SRS system do its thing. The only thing that should matter is: is your review load getting overwhelming? If so then slow down on the new lessons until you manage to get reviews under control. If not then continue doing what you’re
doing and it’ll sort itself out eventually.

If you make too many typos then enable undo in Flaming Durtles. No sense in wasting time on unnecessary reviews because your finger slipped.

Sounds like just a quirk of the timing of when things get moved along and how quickly you’re doing them.

Like I have a ton of Gurus but that’s just because I’m blasting through and it’s a lot faster to get to Guru than master. If anything, my 98% accuracy kind of forces more Guru because I’m moving things from Apprentice to Guru so quickly:

Arcg! I messed up my previous answer!

Thanks for you answer!
not overwhelmed at all actually! I’ve always managed to keep around 100 apprentice by doing 15 lessons a day and I feel like I can generally cope ok!

I’m afraid it’s mostly my accuracy, and I’m afraid
of getting new lessons in the fear of getting them all “stuck” at guru if it makes sense…

Didn’t know of the undo! I’ll try! also trying not to abuse it!!

thanks for the reply!
I’m a bit confused then… it seems that a lot of people that have high accuracy have a higher number of master then guru (end higher enlightened compared to master).
Also youre difference is quite small compared to mine… I’ve litteraly twice the amount of guru compared to master… that’s why i was getting concerned

I would say find out what your accuracy is on WKstats, as that’ll be a better indicator of whether you have a retention issue. Otherwise it just all comes down to different timing on how often you do reviews and lessons.

Apprentice is going to vary wildly from day to day. The rest are hard to compare between different people.

Guru “should” be about 21 times the average number of lessons you do a day. Master should be about 30 times, and Enlightened about 120 times. That’s ideal and steady state. If you’re speeding up and slowing down instead of doing a set number of lessons per day, that’s going to work its way through the stages. Guru is pretty much always going to be much higher than ideal, because almost everything you fail shows up there first (not counting briefly apprentice sometimes)

Assuming 15 lessons a day, your guru looks pretty normal, something around 90% pass rate? Master should rise to more like 500-ish as you pass the Guru ones on.

It looks to me like you don’t fail a LOT, but you have trouble with either the guru-to-master review or the master-to-enlightened one. If so, “cheat” more. Meaning, study them on your own between official reviews.

Number of items in Apprentice depends on number of lessons and mistakes from lower level items. Number of items in Guru depends on number of correct answers for past 1-3 weeks, and mistakes from higher level items. Number of master depends on number of correct answers for Guru reviews from 3-7 weeks ago. And similarly, enlightened and burned.

Basically how well you do will have an effect on various stages weeks or months from now. If it is inconsistent, it just means you had a bad few days. Slow down until apprentice and guru stages clear out a little.
