I keep repeating myself, but I just like the crew on land more. The people involved seem just more interesting to me.
This week we got the big reveal that chioris past is exactly like they speculated, and she was actually the daughter of kousan
I honestly wasn’t surprised by that one bit, and I don’t expect the book intended for it to be a big surprise 
But that throws open the question of who sent the letters even more.
According to the story we heard from kousan it is actually unlikely that the island owner (青司) is the one who survived. It doesn’t seem like he wanted to live after that. That leaves the gardener again. Which wouldn’t have any motives that make sense.
So who is left that is related to chiori in some way, and has a grudge against the students? Maybe someone was going out with her without the rest of them knowing and is taking revenge?
I’m honestly completely blanking on any solid theory at this point in time.
Maybe kousan is actually the true force behind the letters and murders somehow, all while feigning ignorance?
He was at least not home the last time they tried to visit him, and he had a weak excuse of 居留守.
I’m pretty comfortable with the books writing by now. Flows quite nicely.
How about Chiori’s mother? “The Chiori you killed was my daughter.” If the bodies were burned enough and the cops were lazy enough, they might not have noticed that the victims’ genders didn’t match up. All she had to do was cut off her own hand.
Savage.
But I don’t think it would explain the phone call the brothers had after it was delivered.
