Week 8 ギャルと恐竜 ・ Gal and Dino 🦕 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

I’m glad I understood most of the narrative without having to look everything up, but this chapter felt like filler, honestly. A red-herring side-quest to prolong the audience’s attention. I don’t like when shows do that, and not when comics do it either. Oh well I guess that’s a cultural learning here!

Not disagreeing but just curious what, to you, distinguishes this chapter from the others as filler—not because I don’t think this chapter could be called filler, but because considering the story is slice of life in the first place, it’s kinda all felt like filler to me…?

of those, i’d say only a house—obviously you could imagine exceptions: maybe you’re friends with the owner of the restaurant and they did a favor to you staying open late for your party—but in general it’s the kind of “sorry to bother you” that indicates actual care.

kind of like how the idiomatic response to 店員さん saying いらっしゃいませ is silence

I was just reading a manga where someone said お邪魔します when getting in someone’s car, which was surprising enough for me to note it. Although I’ve also seen people say it when they sat on a picnic blanket that someone had invited them to.

If I had to make up a rule of thumb, it seems to be that you would use it when you go to someone’s private space. That’s a house, a classroom, their room, etc. A place that they belong and you’re just visiting. I agree it would be weird to say it at a restaurant under normal circumstances bc you as a customer are expected to come into this place. But maybe if, for example, they were doing you a favor and you got to come early or something along those lines you might say it.. basically if you can imagine your presence there as an imposition in any way, you could potentially use お邪魔します..

But I’m also just a learner so take my thoughts with a grain of salt..

Edit: oops I meant to reply to @tipgriffin79

Previous chapters developed the title characters. Hinted at a core narrative and dramatic questions – who is this Dino? How did this happen? This chapter introduced a side character with no apparent impact on / revelations about the title characters. Shrug.

It will feel super awkward to come into those tiny bars in Golden Gai next month, I was hoping to learn a cool phrase to defuse that feeling, that the locals use…

That’s fair but I want senpai to become a character in her own right

Very light spoiler: I haven’t been putting people in the characters list who don’t come back eventually (but maybe not in volume 1 because I forget where this volume ends in the story ).

I reckon you could use お邪魔します for that. Or maybe ごめんください?

I get the desire for a main plot (I too have burning questions about both Gal and Dino), but I’m not sure this is quite the style of this series. To me it seems more like an episodic slice of life comedy where each chapter is based on a comedic “bit” and a overarching plot/backstory is revealed a little more passively. This chapter doesn’t reveal much, but it does show that 楓 is actively trying to understand Dino, establishes a new character that seems likely to reappear (and perhaps play a part in Dino research), and also defines 楓’s ギャル character by contrasting her with a “normal” family.
