Thanks for that!Okay, so it seems we need to be on our toes with Aozora (not that printed books are immune to typos). Sometimes something doesn’t quite make sense because it’s just a mistake.

EDIT:
So we’ve been breaking our 頭s on the above, but I found in another book a nice construction using verb + そう so perhaps at least that part sinks in more easily
その子が、今にも殺されそうに叫んでいるのです。
That girl (implied from context earlier) is shouting/crying as if she’s about to be killed any minute now.
That’s from 赤いカブトムシ by Edogawa Ranpo. I added kanji so it’s easier to read.
