Quite common in casual/younger people’s speech. Often gets the い → え treatment and is said デケー.

I haven’t the foggiest idea where Kirby came into the conversation, but it’s ガサゴソ (gasa goso), a rustling sound. The sound of him rummaging through something offscreen looking for the hat that he puts on in t he next panel.
It’s a small ッ, so the sound is “su”, but sharply cut off rather than trailing away - a small ッ at the end of a sound-effect or exclamation represents a glottal stop. It’s the sound of him putting on the hat that he’s putting on in the panel.
オシャレ.
It’s 場所を取る with the を omitted. (Particles often get omitted in casual speech, especially when they’re a part of common phrasal expressions.)
There’s a を omitted here too - 何を観てんの = what is it watching?
They’re talking about the TV show now. “Who’s [the main character’s] current partner?”
Both of these bubbes are the name of the actor in AIBO. The answer to the question in the previous panel. As I posted in my first post in this thread.

Yeah I had read it as 食べてんの when I typed that up (despite writing the correct phrase…). Again, I think I was influenced bc I thought he had a cup ramen in front of him and he didn’t.

I find this series actually hilarious. I keep laughing out loud as I read. High praise!!
I had surprisingly little trouble with this chapter, with any confusing parts being cleared up by context from later in the chapter or in here.
Some of my favorite details
Someone already posted this, but the subtle movements of the fingers and mouth are just fantastic.
I’m totally impressed by how expressive this mangaka is with such simple art.
Clearly this is the joke, but the open-mouthed stare in every panel is just priceless.
The hair twirling and curled hair are great.
Also, I know we were only reading until p30 technically, but I added the word on page 31 to the vocab sheet since it related to the chapter we just read.

Yep, agreed. I just wanted to point it out, because it isn’t always obvious when a word is a sorta “set phrase”, and sometimes the meaning isn’t totally intuitive. I’ve had so many experiences where I tried to figure out what something meant, only to figure out that its just “something people say” (and half of the people saying them don’t know why!). This was especially true when I relied on manual lookups a lot, something I think most people still do.
Using YomiNinja and Yomitan now, I almost always catch these weird phrases, because they come up first, before the base vocabulary.
Actually, “teach a man to fish” is a pretty good example. WTF is a foreigner supposed to think that means, until they realize its a set phrase with a bunch of history behind it?

“teach a man to fish” is a bit like とにかく to the “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”'s 兎にも角にも: the longer one comes around eventually and the Nth person has a cute little lightbulb moment and then goes とにかく、両習い方はいいじゃん

Somehow I missed this which is why I was confused - I think I must have had a typo when I put it in and didn’t see a definition! Thanks for clarifying. And thanks again @ghelgheli for the breakdown (now I have both the fish and the ability to fish.. lucky me

I suspect that you entered it into the search field in mixed kana as written in the manga. Jisho (if Jisho is the dictionary you were referring to) doesn’t really play well with mixed kana - if a word doesn’t explicitly have an alternate katakana spelling listed, it won’t come up as a result if you search in katakana.

This was a good chapter that i swung from very confident to not at all in my readings, but the biggest hurdle was the proper names!

I definetly read something wrong while doing my first past when Yamada said 恐竜って小さいんだね, I thought it was something like “I thought you said dinosaur wasn’t small” with the response being, “He’s huge, look at the space he takes up.” but the more I look at it, I’m pretty sure the って isn’t trying to say Kaeda said something. I’m not sure what is being said, but the general idea is that Yamada is calling Dinosaur small.

I figured out most of this easily enough, except for まじか & ウケる, which i thought may have just been tv noise, but we don’t ever hear the tv, and when I tried looking them up, I didn’t get it. But thanks to people on here whose posts made it very helpful to figure out.

I still don’t really understand 見て水谷豊ウケない. I think part of that is how long it took me to find out 水谷豊 was a proper name! and Jisho/Ichi.moe led me down some…uh…odd paths.
What other people said something like 水谷豊 is funny
