Quiz answers:

  • It seems Mami is mostly afraid of not being able to get married to Kakeru. To the point where she’s really scared and desperate.
  • While Mami wanted to prove she could find a husband and a job on her own, on paper she could’ve done that in her home town too. She moved all the way to Tokyo mostly to get away from her parents, in particular her mom, whom she felt would never treat her like and adult as long as she stayed within her reach.
  • She says she’s jealous of women who can look at someone like Kanai and consider them as a potential date/husband, since it would’ve made things simpler for her. She doesn’t seem to blame Kanai himself.

It is interesting to read what each of us consider to be the most important aspect. Since to me, in last week‘s quiz there were a couple of answers that seemed to be basically ok. So possibly a question of where the emphasis is rather than right or wrong in some cases.

Thanks again for all those quizzes. I enjoy them very much! Such a great idea!

Thanks, glad you all like them! And yes I did think these might be a bit controversial, especially the last one where you are not the only person to have chosen a different answer, which is why I explained my reasoning in more detail above. But feel free to disagree ^^

Hi! Happy to report that I’m all caught up!

So that’s what Mami was up to all this time! This was an unexpected change of environment. I’m glad for her, it was the right step to distance herself from everything (although she could have been less dramatic about it) and just be her own person while widening her horizons - I know it was just somewhere to flee for her, but it will definitely end up benefitting her. I’m surprised she doesn’t seem to realize that she’ll worry her parents as well as Kakeru by missing for so long. On the other hand, her parents didn’t seem all that worried after a while, so maybe she did contact them? While she’s aware of all their shortcomings and the effect her upbringing had on her, she still doesn’t seem to want to break relations with them, or even disappoint them in any way.

It was an interesting chapter, with more insights into Mami’s experience and psychology! I have to say I find her very relatable. But gods her mom is awful (not like mine at all!)

I was impressed at the speed at which you were catching up! (which I could follow with the notifications of you liking my posts ^^). Thanks for sticking with the book club!

  • Sendai is colder than Mami expected so she wasn’t properly dressed for it
  • Traffic lights are vertical so that snow doesn’t weight them down

I’m really finding this chapter a slog to work through for some reason; I’m having tell myself “look, just read five pages for now” so I at least make some progress through it. I think I’m just not enjoying reading through all of Mami’s nervousness and insecurity compared to the earlier Kakeru chapters…

(Still got another 25 pages to go of this chapter.)

Interesting! For me it is the opposite. I was tempted to read already the next chapter and did not solely because I wanted to read along with the club.

After weeks of reading along with the club although I was not enjoying the book all that much.

What is getting on my nerves throughout the book, though, are the frequent explanations/examples of what is 善良 and what is 傲慢. Yes, thank you, I already got the basic concepts. No need to explain over and over again, dear author.

I encountered a 善良 in another book I am reading on the side and it kind of freaked me out: „It is haunting me.“ :joy:
