すみません、ちょっと質問なのですが、「物足りない」というお気持ちは、日本語を習い始めてから感じるようになりましたか？ それともその以前から意識されていましたか？
例えば日本人が全員自分のことを「自分」としか言わないとしたら、どうなってたのか、なんて、想像するとおもしろいだろうなと思います。

帝銀事件に関して、おもしろい読み物を見つけたので、ご参考までに。
この作品とは時代が違いますが、女性の言葉の端々に威勢のよさがあって好感をもちました。

いい質問ですね。日本語を習い始めるときに全然違う気持ちでした。ほとんどの一人称は無意味に思えてしまいました。(笑) でも、本を読めべ読むほど、だんだん一人称代名詞の「味」が分かってきました。今、小説を読んでいるときに「あたし。。。ですわ」のような文章を読むと、「ああ、女ですね。それに、丁寧な年上の方かもしれません。」のような思いがちですね。
翻訳した文章はいつも物足りなさを感じますけど、日本語と言えば、一人称と丁寧レベルは大事だと思います。

欧米言語では、一人称なんて当然で意識されないと思うので、その視点で日本語を読むと、人称の種類の多さに呆れる気持ち、想像できます 
私の日本語の人称のイメージは、携帯にたくさーんついているストラップです。要は一個の携帯なんですけど、個性を表現できるツールとして着飾る感じが似ているような。
オリジナルで作品を読めるのは、外国語学習の醍醐味ですよね

気になった個所をいくつか調べました。
“it’s a garden, not something essential in the way that farms, or schools, or irrigation systems are” (1.3)
３つの例の中で、最後の例は少しズレてるような。
“Everybody knows the story of the local lord who had water diverted uphill from the river by an inverted siphoning technique,(…) the legend of artisans who were killed to protect the secret of that technology” (1.4)

I finished chapter 1. Intros like this are still a bit tricky since I tend to assume that I’m missing things because I don’t understand the language well enough, when really the author is just being vague on purpose 
.
I’m enjoying the book so far, though it feels like I really need to pay attention while reading it.

The Advanced Book Club is a big time commitment for my current reading speed but murder mysteries are my thing so I read the free sample in hopes that I wouldn’t be into it… tough luck, I bought the book yesterday and finished the 1st chapter (there was like 1 section left out of the sample) so here we go!

I just found out about this book club today but I’ll try my best to catch up with the schedule. Tadoku challenge in January will give me a huge boost to read a lot and finger cross, finish the book in time

I finished ch1 and enjoyed it so far: the eerie atmosphere, mysterious characters 
1.5 days until New year but I’ll continue reading to build momentum for Tadoku challenge.
