Congratulations! Hiroshima is a great place, I have a lot of friends from Hiroshima. I would recommend that you get out if the city and experience the other towns and the countryside. Shikoku, is amazing and well worth a couple of hours drive. Iām insanely jealous!
As a new user to wanikani, this post is really inspiring! there is a lot of good advice here!
And you got it from Wanikaniās favorite son/daughter, too.

Thanks! Oh god my stats are disgusting DDD:
Do you have a set amount of times you work on this everyday? I do all my reviews and lessons once a day and i think my average time spent on a level is around 21 days. I would do it more often throughout the day but I also use Rosetta Stone and sometimes study from the Genki Textbook. You moved through the levels so quickly especially the last ones.
The hell? This is so much cuteness in one post.
I usually spent around an hour or two a day. The later levels required about 3+ hours a day, but I was also significantly better at memorizing new kanji at that point, which is the hardest part for me.
The main thing was SRS spacing. That helps with workload, accuracy, and level-up time. I will link up to a post earlier in this thread which talks about how you can do a limited amount of work on a regular schedule and still level up in around 8+ days depending on your schedule. The Genki idea sounds like a good plan. Up until now, I have been learning grammar informally through reading native material and then looking up new grammar when I encounter it, but formal grammar study is probably a good idea.
From what I have heard, Rosetta stone is not terribly useful for serious language study. The time I tried it for Spanish, it was painfully slow and did not take advantage of the knowledge that adults have which can speed up language learning. But obviously if you feel like that is working well for you, keep going with it. Maybe the Japanese is more functional then I have heardā¦
The link below pretty clearly explains level-up time, scheduling, etc⦠In my experience, I did best when I followed the SRS intervals religiously. Best of luck. I hope this helps.
Also, a note on my suggestions as far as Japanese learning based on my experiences so far:
I think learning how to read quickly is really important in any language. In my first language, English, my vocabulary grew vastly the moment I learned to read. The same experience has been the case for me in Japanese. So my main priority was learning the kanji quickly and effectively, as well as some relevant vocabulary so that I can start reading and learning more on my own with native materials. Listening is super important too, I think, as a beginner. I listen as much as I can every day to a variety of things. I also try to read regularly. With that in mind, I made WK my main place to spend my time for a year and a half, and now I can more freely dedicate my time to broadening my vocabulary and grammar knowledge in the wild and practicing speaking with natives to improve on where my reading and listening have gotten me. Obviously this is just my experience. Maybe others have better approaches or maybe things work differently for other people.
FYI, as of a few hours ago, the stats site is now https://www.wkstats.com. The old address will still forward you, though.
@TamanegiNoKame CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU DID IT!!! Aim for the moon because if you fail youāll land among the stars, this is your time to shine, etc etc inspirational sayings.
But for real, Iām super thrilled for you and hope to make it there one day myself!
Congratulations!
Now youāre going to start on grammar, right?
Yes. I have been doing some grammar along the way, just not enough. So now I am going to start doing more grammar and vocab and reading. Thanks!
@TamanegiNoKame
May I ask you a stupid question?
You said you read material and looked up the grammar as you encountered it. How did you do that? Where? Do you have any good place for looking up grammar?
Iām asking this because I started reading as well, and there are sooooo many grammar points that I donāt know. I usually try googling it, but itās difficult to formulate and more often than not I canāt find an answer.
