WaniKani Content Overhaul

Did you know in the US you can donate to the KKK but not Wikileaks

Starwars is huge in Japan!

I’d argue that in context they are fine. When I was in Tokyo starwars was a big thing and my friends either were Disneyland(Mickey Mouse etc) or Starwars fanatics. Sure its pop culture and my personal experience in Tokyo, but for Wanikani it worked really well.

The in context thing could also apply to Hard Gay, its Japanese (a pun on gei=art)

Chew, Chewy & Churro are literally the only words that come up in a search. Churro is (I’d say) out of context.

Okay that makes sense. My replacement mnemonics are all Pikachu-based, which is also pop-culture-y so I don’t have anything better…

Pikachu theme sounds cool!! :+1:

It looks like you can donate to the Wikileaks legal defense fund, so in a way you can contribute toward clearing their legal mess. I don’t know much about it, but it could be a worthy cause.

As much as the KKK disgust me, in USA we by in large cannot punish people for the way they think. It’s a very slippery slope. Of course my statement was tongue in cheek - being offended by them only validates their existence.

@anon20839864 @oldbonsai

I just came across the kanji for HIT. It used to use the kun’yomi “u” (sorry, no IME at work), and is only shaking for the on’yomi reading “da” (I just found out). I thought items like this were supposed to be whitelisted? Did this one slip through the cracks?

I just noticed that some kanji had their levels rearranged. While I’m still a little annoyed by some of the radical changes and the additional time it will take for me to relearn them, I do appreciate that 私 has been moved down from level 14 to 6 and that 僕 has been moved down from level 44 to 12. I was always frustrated by how high of a level 僕 was assigned to, even though it’s obviously ultra common and ultra useful.

Full diff of kanji level and meaning text changes I generated from a script:

I politely disagree. In the US, we often punish people for the way they think. Back in 2003, fans started boycotting the Dixie Chicks after they voiced their opposition to the Iraq war, they were black listed in several radio stations, and only after seven years they started touring again. More recently, a white woman lost her job after a racist rant against a black neighbor. A man who attended a white nationalist march lost his job at a hot dog chain. Moreover, all this is completely legal. The first amendment does not grant immunity from the consequences of one’s speech. It only gives you the right to talk almost everything you want without incurring the risk of going to prison.
PS. If you work for the government then you cannot be fired for your political speech but with the private sector this is not the case.

Changing the primary reading is just like any other content update, so they are not whitelisted. Only the old radical names were whitelisted.

Sorry, I was referencing this with respect to enforcement of laws by the government since the previous post was in the same context. My statement was overly generalized and could be easily misinterpreted. So, you are correct, my employer could rightfully terminate me if I were a member of the KKK (I live in a right to work state, so I can be terminated at any time), but I could not be jailed for it unless I broke a specific law.

So, in short, I think we do agree.

Sorry I missed the context. I also agree with you: Wikileaks is being accused of serious crimes in the US while the KKK, for the time being, is not.

In my mind he is an ex-workmate who helped his new employer poach most of my other workmates. Hopefully whatever works for farmers can work for firemen too.

Wait, there’s a WK mnemonic canon now?
Please don’t tell George Lucas or he’ll screw that up too.

I see that the JSDF adopted a new hymn.

New construction options

OK, I’m really confused by the mnemonic reading change for 流.

Old:

There is one way you can save yourself from this tsunami stream of death, however. And that is if you are Ryu (りゅう) from Street Fighter! You’re Ryu and you can shoot a hadoken at the tsunami and blow all of the stream water away with your mighty technique.

HINTS

Imagine yourself as Ryu. I’m sure you’ve seen him from the Street Fighter games and may have even pretended to do a hadoken once or twice. Imagine yourself as Ryu doing this hadoken to save yourself from the tsunami stream.

New:

Next to the trash stream you suddenly see Ryu (りゅう) from Street Fighter and he looks pissed. He’s furious that so many people throw their trash in the river and it causes streams like this.

HINTS

Now Ryu is punching and kicking and tatsumaki senpukyaku-ing all of the trash into burnable and non-burnable piles. But the stream doesn’t end. Now he’s trying to get his other Street Fighter pals to help him beat it back!

Why take out the “HADOKEN!!!” That was by far the most memerable part of the mnemonic for me? If you want to change it to “Rio de Janeiro” or something, fine, but if you’re going to use Ryu, you HAVE to have the “HADOKEN!!!”

amiright?

Can we maybe get the ability to dismiss the content update notification on the dashboard now? It’s been blinding me long enough now, I think.

@seanblue is correct:

I don’t think this was intentional, but if it was, the argument was probably that we want people to think of Ryu for the reading instead of a part of the word hadoken.

We asked the devs about this, but I’ll mention it again.
